PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in a yacht and boat building environment where learners need to demonstrate an understanding of marine corrosion and basic metal working.

The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of corrosion, how to minimize the risk of corrosion, and the properties of different metals found in the marine environment. The learner will also demonstrate the selection and safe use of basic hand and power tools used for marking, drilling, cutting, tapping and shaping metal.

This includes:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of basic corrosion processes.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the 'galvanic series' of metals in sea water.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the installation of corrosion protection and prevention equipment on a boat.
  • Manufacture metal components.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
All work is performed under supervision.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of basic corrosion processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Three categories of corrosion are explained in terms of scientific process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The causes of corrosion are explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The three categories of corrosion are:
  • Electrochemical corrosion.
  • Galvanic corrosion.
  • Electrolytic corrosion.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Methods of controlling and preventing corrosion are explained in the context of a marine environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Demonstrate an understanding of the 'galvanic series' of metals in sea water.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Factors necessary for galvanic corrosion are explained in the context of a marine environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Factors affecting the rate of galvanic corrosion are explained in the context of a marine environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Demonstrate an understanding of the installation of corrosion protection and prevention equipment on a boat.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Boat parts most at risk of corrosion are identified in the context of a marine environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The corrosion risk associated with the different materials used in the manufacture of boat components is explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Precautions and actions to be taken to minimize the risk of corrosion are explained in the context of a marine environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Manufacture metal components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A metal plate is marked, cut, drilled, tapped and shaped according to specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The metal plate is prepared and painted according to specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The metal plate is mounted according to specifications.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
