PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in a yacht and boat building environment where learners need to prepare, cut shape and join wood, plywood and other manufactured boards for use in the construction or interior of a boat.

The successful learner will be able to demonstrate skills using both hand and power tools in the preparation, cutting, shaping and joining of wood, plywood and other manufactured boards used in boat building applications.

This includes:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the properties and uses of wood, plywood and other manufactured boards used in boatbuilding.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the properties and uses of different adhesives used in boatbuilding.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the use of the wide range of fasteners used in boatbuilding.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the use of measuring and marking equipment in a marine environment.
  • Using basic hand and power tools used in boatbuilding applications.
  • Making basic woodworking joints.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the properties and uses of wood, plywood and other manufactured boards used in boatbuilding.

    The lumber conversion processes and the specific properties of the resultant products are demonstrated according to the specified application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The different species of timber used in boatbuilding are explained focussing on their specific properties and applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Plywood manufacturing and grading processes are explained in terms of their conformity to international marine standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Properties of other manufactured boards, and their application in boatbuilding are explain according to boat building standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the properties and uses of the different adhesives used in boatbuilding.

    The different materials used in the manufacture of fasteners are explained according to their properties.

    Different fasteners are explained according to their applications, size and range.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The specific uses of measuring and marking equipment are explained in terms of their specific application in boatbuilding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measuring and marking equipment is used in boat building. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tape measure, steel rule, plumb bob, spirit level, water level, chalk line, marking gauge, dovetail marker, mortise gauge, vernier calliper, micrometer, scriber and marking knife.

    Use basic hand and power tools in boatbuilding applications.

    The application of different hand and power tools is explained in terms of their use in boatbuilding.

    Basic hand and power tools are used safely according to standard procedure.

  • Hand saws.
  • Chisels.

    Woodworking joints are accurately marked out according to specification.

    Joints are made according to specifications.

    Joints are fitted according to the adhesive specifications.

    The joints to be demonstrated include but are not limited to:

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
