PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of this unit standard is for learners to be able to use additive and shaping processes and associated materials and tools to produce sculptural work. Achievement of the standard may involve developing competence in one or more malleable sculptural materials - these include clay, plaster-of-aris, cement, papier-mâché, resin and putty.
Visual artists equipped with this competence will be able to contribute to the development of a professional culture of sculptural practice within the visual arts, and produce artwork which is underpinned by an applied knowledge of the procedures applicable to additive and shaping processes. This standard provides qualifying learners with a basis. Credited learners are capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
> Produce sculptures through visual investigation, at NQF Level 3. |

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Develop designs for sculptural works using additive and shaping processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Preparatory investigations and designs are presented. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Investigations include drawings using a variety of mark-making techniques and media, 3 dimensional models and maquettes, formal studies, experimentation with different media and found imagery. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Investigations and designs indicate material(s) to be employed for shaping and additive sculptural work, and include technical experiments with chosen material that are relevant to designs. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Materials include clay, plaster of paris, papier-mâché, cement, putty, resin and wax. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Artistic intentions associated with image/design are explained with regard to the technical and formal constraints and possibilities presented by additive and shaping processes and materials. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Relevant precedents for artwork using additive and shaping processes and materials are identified and discussed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Formal qualities of designs demonstrates that consideration has been given to the technical constraints and possibilities inherent in additive and shaping processes and materials with regard to structural stability, scale, level of detail, malleability, mark-making and use of surface decoration and colour. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
Investigations and designs indicate that issues related to structural stability and archival integrity have been taking into account and planned for. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Prepare and maintain materials and equipment for additive and shaping processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Relevant sculpture materials, tools and equipment have been effectively organised in workspace for ease of use, access, safety, cleaning and storage. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Materials for producing sculpture are appropriately prepared and maintained before and during working process in accordance with specifications related to selected materials. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Materials are prepared and maintained with due regard for archival integrity. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Materials are prepared and maintained with due regard for health and safety of self and others. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Prepare supports/armatures for sculptural work employing additive and shaping processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Materials and tools for constructing armatures and supports are appropriate to primary media being employed, and have been selected with due regard for the archival integrity of work. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Supports/armatures are structurally stable. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Shape and structure of supports/armatures demonstrate consideration of the chosen primary materials and additive and shaping processes to be employed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Supports/armatures demonstrate consideration of the final form of the sculptural work. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Produce a sequence of finished works employing additive and shaping processes. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Sequence of finished work involves producing at least five final artworks employing at least two different materials associated with additive and shaping processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Correct procedures have been followed in working with shaping and additive processes and materials, in accordance with standard practice associated with particular materials. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Finished works demonstrate that consideration has been given to the qualities and characteristics of additive and shaping processes and materials with regard to shape and form, structural stability, scale, level of detail, malleability, mark-making and use of surface decoration and colour. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Deviations from/developments of original designs apparent in finished work are explained in terms of the qualities and characteristics of the chosen material/s and the creative and technical aspects of additive and shaping processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Finished works are structurally sound and stable. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Where appropriate materials, tools, equipment and procedures associated with treating and/or firing finished artworks have been correctly applied, in accordance with standard practices in field, and technical guidelines. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
Where appropriate, materials and tools for surface decoration have been correctly applied in accordance with artistic intentions and original design work. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
