PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is for learners to develop informed responses to artistic and non-artistic images and objects, based on investigation of a wide variety of contexts for the production and reception of images and objects. The ability to understand how images and objects and the artistic practices and conventions that shape them are informed by particular personal, artistic, socio-cultural and political contexts is a central conceptual competence for visual artists engaging with artistic precedents and the socio-cultural and political context for their own work. This set of competencies also provides visual artists with an informed approach to discussing their own and others artwork with their peers, other artists and potential clients, gallerists and buyers.

Through promoting the development of artists well-versed in the 'reading' and contextualising of images and objects, the standard promotes greater levels of critical and conceptual rigour in the visual arts industry in South Africa, providing artists with a basis for competitive advantage in the concept-driven market for visual arts.
