This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a Yacht and Boat Building environment where marine fairing and painting is carried out.

The learner can demonstrate understanding, knowledge and competence in the following areas:

  • Yacht fairing techniques
  • Yacht painting techniques
  • Yacht coating systems
  • Troubleshooting yacht coating failures

    People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify and apply the personal health and safety factors to be considered when working with marine paint and fairing compounds.
  • Prepare boat surfaces for fairing and painting.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of yacht and boat fairing techniques.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of yacht and boat painting techniques and marine coating systems.
  • Troubleshoot common failures in marine coating systems.

    Identify and describe the personal health and safety factors to be considered when working with marine paint and fairing compounds.

    Health and safety risks in the workplace are identified and an explanation given of the frequency at which they might occur and the danger they pose to people and the work environment.

    Appropriate workplace health and safety standards are implemented at all times.

    Appropriate action is recommend and/or taken to remedy non-compliance with health and safety requirements.

    Prepare boat surfaces for fairing and painting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The preparation of the boat surface is explained in accordance with the coating system manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Highs and lows are marked on the boat surface in order to determine the application of fairing compound according to boat building principles.

    Demonstrate an understanding of yacht and boat fairing techniques.

    The process of yacht and boat fairing is described according to boat building principles.

    Fairing techniques are applied during the building/renovation of a boat/yacht ensuring a high quality product and a minimum wastage of materials.

    Demonstrate an understanding of yacht and boat painting techniques and marine coating systems.

    Yacht and boat painting techniques are identified and explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Painting techniques and marine coating systems and methods are applied during the building/renovation of a boat/yacht ensuring a high quality product and a minimum wastage of materials.

    Including but not limited to:
  • Fairing compound, primer, top coat.

    Common failures of marine coating systems are described and their causes and remedies identified and discussed.

    Common failures in marine coating systems are identified and solutions to prevent/ remove them are recommended.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
