PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to crosswork critical diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to crosswork diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for crossworking critical diamond gemstones.
  • Crosswork critical diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-crossworking cleaning, checking and security activities.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons crossworking any diamond gemstones under minimal supervision.

    Critical diamond gemstones are those where there is a high potential to lose weight during processing that will result in the finished article being below the required international size category required. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment and tools used to crosswork diamond gemstones and describe their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools and their components used to crosswork diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of adhering to the process of crossworking is explained in terms of achieving the desired proportions of the finished polished diamond gemstone. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for crossworking critical diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Two, three and four points in rough diamond gemstones are identified in different diamond types from drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The polishing grains in two, three and four point stones are identified in terms of the crystallography of diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems that can be encountered when crossworking critical sawn and makeable diamond gemstones are described in terms of types of problems, key features, implications for polishing and methods to overcome such problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:
  • Gletzes.
  • Naat.
  • Cross-grain.
  • Holes.
  • Flaws.
  • Impurities.
  • Naturals.
  • Weight loss.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advanced faceting hints and techniques for crossworking critical sawn and makeable diamond gemstones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate crossworking techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Crosswork critical diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stones received are set in an appropriate pot and located in polishing tangs for crossworking according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate tang selection is made for each stage of crossworking according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A scaiffe is ensured to have been correctly prepared for crossworking at each stage before putting the stone on the scaiffe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during setting and clamping and remedial action is taken where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Stones are crossworked using the appropriate methodology to address the given problems in line with the requirements as indicated by the Marker and within defined quality and output standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    The scaiffe is frequently checked for any defects during the process of crossworking. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures.

    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during crossworking and remedial action is taken where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are frequently checked to ensure they stay within the laid down tolerance levels after crossworking.

    Laid down tolerance levels will be found in the employer's:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from pots after crossworking, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after crossworking diamond gemstones. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean pots and tangs.
  • Replace pots and tangs into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after crossworking in terms of the workplace security system. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
