PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard covers the application of bonding agents in order to prevent corrosion, abrasion, vibration and shock for a range of surfaces. Learners need to learn and be familiar with pre- and post-application procedures in order to achieve satisfactory bonding results. Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Prepare material for bonding purposes.
  • Prepare surface for bonding purposes.
  • Apply bonding agent in line with surface conditions and requirements.
  • Handle and store bonding agent in line with industry standards.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Cold bonding, hot bonding and chemical cure.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Prepare material for bonding purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Material for bonding of surfaces is selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Material for bonding of surfaces is cut to size.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Material for bonding of surfaces is cleaned and dusted, if required and where appropriate.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare surface for bonding purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Bonding agent received for bonding of surfaces is checked to ensure it is correct for the task at hand.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Surface material to which bonding argent is to be applied is checked in order to determine the correct primer to be applied in line with standard industry and or standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Primer is applied to surface as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Consequences of incorrect surface preparation are given.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Apply bonding agent in line with surface conditions and requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    Bonding agent is identified.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Reasons for selection of type of bonding agent per surface condition and requirements are given.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Bonding agent is applied in line with surface conditions and requirements and in line with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Reasons for incorrect application of type of bonding agent per surface are given.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Handle and store bonding agent in line with industry standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Correct Personal Protective Equipment is worn when using bonding agent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Reasons for wearing PPE when handling bonding agents are given.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Bonding agent is handled correctly and safely in line standard industry safety requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Bonding agent is stored correctly and safely in accordance with standard industry safety requirements.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
