PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard will have knowledge about dismantling complex assemblies. They will know how to prepare for and perform the dismantling activity according to technical information and standard procedures. They will also perform finishing operations and ensure quality in the system.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard involves the dismantling of complex electrical components and/or mechanical components and assemblies.

    Job instructions are interpreted to establish dismantling requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Technical/engineering drawings and other documentation are interpreted to determine dismantling sequence. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other documentation includes checklists, engineering reports, free-hand drawings.

    Area for the dismantling is prepared according to standard operating procedure

    Materials, components and tools required at the workstation are checked to ensure they meet the quality required.

    Components/assemblies for dismantling are handled, moved and secured according to standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and instruments required for dismantling are used according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer's specifications and the implications of misusing them are discussed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools and instruments include hand and power tools, hydraulic, heating and lifting equipment, and pneumatic tools.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components/assemblies are dismantled according to engineering drawings and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of adhering to dismantling process cycle time is explained in order to meet customer and company requirements.

    Dismantled components/assemblies are identified and marked according to standard procedure.

    Marking of components includes engraving, punching, labelling, inking, colour coding.

    All occurrences, activities, adjustments and problems related to the dismantling process, materials and components during a shift are recorded as per company procedure.

    The implications of incorrect storing of dismantled components, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on health, safety and the environment.

    Scrap material is disposed of according to workplace, health and environmental requirements and the implications of not doing so are discussed.

    Finishing operations are performed timeously to prevent bottlenecks in the system.

    Quality deviations are dealt with according to standard operating procedure and reported to the appropriate authorities.

    All activities and adjustments carried out in order to maintain quality in the system are documented and discussed at appropriate quality forums.

    All quality deviations and inspections results are documented and reported to appropriate personnel according to company procedure.
