PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A Road safety audit process focuses on the contribution of the road elements to accidents. By identifying the potential safety problems during the early stages of a project, the design can be modified or changed at low cost, thus eliminating potential accidents.

As the management of accident risk is a long term strategy, it requires corporate support. The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of road traffic safety management and engineering.

The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the Exit Level Outcomes required for various management, accident prevention, incident management and engineering qualifications.
The Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Describing road safety audits.
  • Collect and analyse accident data/statistics.
  • Minimizing the severity and accidents risk of road traffic accidents that may be influenced by the road facility or adjacent environment.
  • Creating and maintaining an awareness of safe design practice during all the stages of a road project.

    Elements include but are not limited to the road pavement, potholes, rutting, road traffic signs, drainage, markings, fencing, adequate and safety road junctions, traffic volumes, passing and no passing opportunities, speed limits, traffic speeds, queue lengths.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the LGSETA Education and Training Quality Assurer (ETQA) who has jurisdiction over this field of learning in conjunction with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
  • The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a technical qualification in this learning area.
  • The learner can be assessed in the language of his/her choice although if s/he has to report incidents or conditions to someone else, s/he will be assessed on his/her ability to report in the language commonly used in the working environment.
  • The learner will be assessed in the workplace or by simulation, but can submit documents, projects, test results and assignments that are not produced in the workplace or by the Recognition of Prior Learning process.
  • The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification.
