The person credited with this unit standard is able to provide a paraffin or oil foot and hand treatment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare the workstation for a paraffin foot and hand treatment according to organisational procedures.
  • Prepare the client for a paraffin foot and hand treatment.
  • Perform a paraffin hand treatment.
  • Perform a paraffin foot treatment.
  • Perform oil manicure.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the workstation for a paraffin hand/foot treatment according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation is prepared to meet the required levels of occupational, health, hygiene and safety requirement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The record keeping documents are selected in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the treatment process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools for specialised manicure and pedicure service are identified and selected in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Products for oil and paraffin hand and foot treatment are selected to meet client's needs.

    The client is received and consulted with in a professional manner according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of paraffin hand and foot treatment is explained in terms of its benefits. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Benefits include but are not limited to the relief of foot pain, muscle stiffness, sore joints, muscle spasms, arthritis, dry and cracked heels and hand and increase of circulation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The skin and nails are assessed to determine treatment to be performed according to the clients needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client is suitably prepared for a paraffin treatment according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The nail and surrounding skin are sanitised with appropriate products and tools and left free of any nail varnish. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hands/feet are soaked in a sanitising solution to meet the treatment plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The hands, lower arms/lower legs, feet are exfoliated and dried according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The wax is peeled off and product residue is removed with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The paraffin wax heater is replenished and temperature control is set according to manufacturers' instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    The client is advised of homecare treatment and products to maintain service. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform an oil manicure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation is prepared for an oil manicure with the applicable tools, products and materials according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of paraffin hand and foot treatment is explained in terms of its benefits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is suitably prepared for the oil manicure according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The nail and surrounding skin is cleansed and made free of any nail varnish with products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The natural nail is shaped according to client's preferences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hands are exfoliated and soaked in a bowl with warm oil and the cuticles are manicured and groomed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    A relaxing massage is conducted in a continuous manner on the hand and forearm with an appropriate medium utilising effleurage, petrissage and/or friction movements to suit the client's needs.

    Provide aftercare advice.
