PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation and their client's hand for the use of an electric drill file for nail enhancement service.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare workstation and client to perform a natural prepping treatment.
  • Perform maintenance filing, removal of cracks, lifted products and cuticle work after product application with an electric nail drill.
  • Perform a French back fill service with an electrical nail drill.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 3.

    It is also assumed that learners are competent in performing a manicure and pedicure service at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare workstation and client to perform a natural prepping treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation, is prepared according to organisational requirements to meet the required levels of occupational health and safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation refers to setting up tools, products, equipment and materials.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Client's needs and expectations are evaluated to draw a treatment plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client's nail and skin condition is assessed to determine any abnormalities requiring special treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Contra-indications are identified and explained to client for referral purposes to a professional health practitioner where required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Contraindications include but are not limit to skin or nail disorders or diseases, allergic reactions, bruising or swelling, areas exhibiting loss of tactile sensation, cuts or abrasions, recent operations and areas of recent fractures or sprains.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Prepping of natural nail for artificial service is performed with electric nail drill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Electrical nail drill and equipment are selected according to treatment plan.

    Perform maintenance filing, removal of cracks, lifted products and cuticle work.

    Equipment is cleaned, disinfected and maintained to meet occupational health, hygiene and safety in accordance with organisational and manufacturer's requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prepared refers to cleaning and disinfecting electrical equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of products to perform artificial nail services are described in terms of their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The electric nail drill and bits are identified and described in terms of their uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Uses include but are not limited to bring the artificial nail back in to balance and removing cracks in the products.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe working practices are explained in accordance with organisational procedures and personal safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for using protective and safety equipment during treatment are explained in terms of personal safety practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protective and safety equipment include but are not limited to goggles or glasses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The electric nail drill and drill bits are selected and used according to manufacturers and organisational recommendations.

    Product is applied according to client's requirements.

    Underside of nail is drilled to remove excess glue or nail product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Feedback from client during treatment is elicited to determine any discomfort for remedial action.

    Perform a French back fill service with an electric nail drill.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Artificial nail is balanced using the electric nail drill and bits in accordance with manufacturer and organisational instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The product from zone is removed using an electric nail drill and drill bits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Used materials are disposed according to the Occupational Health and Safety regulations and organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Nail service is evaluated to ensure that it matches the agreed treatment plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Evaluation include but is not limited to checking finished results interms of nail shape, smoothness and neatness of nails with no excess product on cuticle or surrounding skin, and no cuts or abrasions to skin or cuticles.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
