PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for temporary hair removal, assess the hair growth and skin of their client and perform the removal of unwanted facial and body hair. Learners are able to use strip wax, hot wax, sugaring depilation for the hair removal treatment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain hair growth and hair types.
  • Assess the hair growth and skin in order to perform a temporary hair removal service.
  • Prepare workstation for a temporary hair removal.
  • Perform temporary hair removal by means of waxing.
  • Perform temporary hair removal by means of bleaching.
  • Perform temporary hair removal by means of sugaring.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Temporary hair removal services include hot waxing, strip waxing sugaring and bleaching.
  • A basic hygiene procedure includes the personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools, equipment, plinth/chair, area and trolley.
  • Receiving the client will include supply with appropriate protective clothing, positioning client comfortably.
  • Recognised safety precautions pertaining to electrical and chemical procedures must be applied.
  • Contra-indication and precaution checklist includes allergies, cuts and abrasions.
  • Correct and complete systems and products should be used.
  • Cold wax will include but not limited to strip wax and body temperature wax.

    Equipment is selected, prepared, and arranged to accord maximum efficiency of service.

    The client is suitably positioned and protective clothes covering provided for treatment to maintain client's cleanliness and comfort in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Suitable waxing product is selected and applied in accordance with manufacturers' instructions to meet client satisfaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The area to be treated is prepared and draped for a cold wax according to organisational and hygienic requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The client record card is completed according to organisational requirements sales opportunities for further treatments and products and suitable homecare advice and support are identified and recommended that ate suitable with the clients needs.

    The removal and disposal of cold wax is performed in accordance with organisational, hygienic and safety requirements and client discomfort is minimized and modesty maintained throughout the service.

    The selected hair removal service is performed according to manufacturers' instructions and without injury or skin damage.

    The temperature of the wax is tested and a safe, comfortable working temperature is maintained throughout the service in accordance with organisational, hygienic and safety requirements.

    Safety precautions are observed in terms of control of wax temperature to minimise the risk of skin damage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process of removing unwanted hair by means of bleaching is explained in terms of its advantages and disadvantages. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The disadvantages of bleaching include but are not limited to skin irritation, temporary skin discoloration, pruritus, and the prominence of bleached hair against tanned or naturally dark skin.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Common sites for temporary hair removal by means of bleaching are identified and described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common sits include the upper lip, beard area, and arms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The active ingredients of bleaching agents are identified and described in terms of their effects on hair. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Active ingredients include but are not limited to hydrogen peroxide and sulphates.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A small patch test is performed to assess for allergic reaction in accordance with manufacturer's instructions prior to the bleaching process.

    Perform temporary hair removal by means of sugaring.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects from sugaring are identified and explained in terms of their adverse results. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adverse results include but are not limited to pain, hyper pigmentation, scarring, folliculitis, and ingrown hair pseudofolliculitis.

    The removal and disposal of the sugaring product is performed in accordance with organisational, hygienic and safety requirements.

    Modesty is maintained throughout the service to minimise discomfort.

    Consumption of products and materials is used in an economic and effective manner.

    The treatment area is left clear of unwanted hair and product and appropriate aftercare products are applied according to client's needs and manufacturers instructions.
