PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners involved in the storage of ammunition and explosives. Learners credited with this unit standard will possess the knowledge, skills and techniques required to design and manage an explosives storage facility. This unit standard will contribute towards compliance with legal, safety and organisational requirements related to the warehousing of ammunition and explosives.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the design and construction of an explosives storage facility.
  • Explain and calculate the storage facility capacity requirement.
  • Explain explosives and ammunition storage requirements.
  • Store ammunition in an explosives storage facility.

    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    Ammunition and explosives may include but are not limited to small arms ammunition; mortars; grenades; artillery shells; gun ammunition; pyrotechnics; aerial delivered ammunition; naval ammunition; propellants, liquid and solid; high explosives; guided missiles; warheads; devices; and chemical agent substances and components.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the design and construction of an explosives storage facility.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of storing ammunition according to its nature is explained in accordance with legal and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The storage of ammunition is explained according to Government Explosives Category requisites. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The placement of fire fighting class symbols and equipment is explained in accordance with legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The location of an explosive storage facility is described in accordance with legal and safety prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Traversing requirements in an explosives storage facility are described in accordance with legislation, safety and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The inside and outside safety distances for an explosives storage facility building are calculated using the formulae prescribed in legislation and organisational policy.

    Explain and calculate the storage facility capacity requirement.

    The reasons for maximum ammunition storage limits for an explosives storage facility are explained in terms of legal prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The maximum explosives storage limit for an explosives storage facility is calculated using net explosive quantity and the prescribed safety distances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The 'man limit' within an explosives storage facility is explained in accordance with legislation and safety requisites.

    The methods of securing an explosives storage facility are described in order to safeguard the ammunition and explosives content.

    Access control to an explosives storage facility is applied to maximise safety and security.

    The requirements for storing ammunition and explosives during a thunderstorm are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements must include with and without lightening protection.

    The procedure for dealing with ammunition containers is explained with an example of each situation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Situations include but are not limited to opening ammunition containers; damaged ammunition containers and damaged container seals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal, safe and secure requirements for the storing of ammunition and explosives are explained with an example of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements may include but are not limited to temperature limitations; protection of ammunition from moisture; ventilation requisites; movement and maintenance of clean working conditions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lots and batches are stacked in accordance with legal, safety, Government Explosives Category; ventilation and organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Broken batch lots are stored according to safety and organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ammunition and explosives storage is monitored to maintain safety standards and manage health risks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The use of transit facilities is explained in terms of the roles and the rules of transit areas.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2015. 

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    The storage of ammunition by GEC and Fire Class symbols, is still in use in South Africa, however international regulations and procedures have changed over the last few years and a new system was developed according to which the hazards of dangerous goods are classified in terms of the UN Hazard Classification Code (HCC) system. Ammunition and explosives are classified by Hazard Division (HD) and Compatibility Group (CG) - amalgamated as the HCC.
