PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are involved in the maintenance and repair of ammunition. Learners assessed against this unit standard will possess the skills and techniques required to plan an Ammunition Process Building task. This unit standard will contribute towards compliance with legal, safety and organisational requirements related to the storage of ammunition and explosives.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Research an Ammunition Process Building task.
  • Perform a preliminary investigation.
  • Design a task layout.
  • Compile a work instruction.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Research an Ammunition Process Building task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Research is conducted using the range of available documents on a given APB task to determine the scope of the work and the process that needs to be followed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Available documents include but are not limited to Instructions, Unit Load Specification, Marking Manual, Statistics List, Comprehensive Classified List, Republic Ammunition Identification Number Book, Ammunition and Explosives Technical Manuals, Marking Drawings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The planning process is described in accordance with organisational policy and prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Restrictions and constraints in the process flow are identified and suitable actions are taken to rectify these. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The task requirement is analysed in to determine the process and the resources required to complete a given task. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform a preliminary investigation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A preliminary inspection plan is compiled to identify the physical location of the ammunition type and actions to be taken and role players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ammunition is visually inspected in a storage facility to determine the physical condition, packaging and storage conditions of the ammunition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A written report is compiled in accordance with organisational policy to recommend the level of maintenance and repair of the inspected ammunition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Design a task layout. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A given Ammunition Process Building task is designed to determine the flow diagram, work method, risks involved and comfort of the personnel involved in executing the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A flow diagram is designed based upon the planning that was conducted to visually represent the tasks and goals of the personnel involved in the given task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The static safety requirements are identified in accordance with organisational policy and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mobile safety requirements are identified in accordance with organisational policy and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The regulations applicable to the care of ammunition in an explosive workplace are described in accordance with relevant legislation and organisational policy prescripts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Compile a work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A work instruction is compiled for a given APB task in accordance with layout prescribed in organisational standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The work instruction must include the flow diagram and operating instruction per task.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process for obtaining the approval of the work instruction is described in accordance with organisational standard operating procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant QAP.
