This learning is aimed at individuals entering or currently employed in any capacity where handling of hazardous/dangerous and dangerous freight occurs across a range of different environments. The applied competence expressed in this standard covers largely familiar scenarios requiring limited discretion and judgement, and the responsibility that is defined in terms of relevant legislation. |

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the Freight Handling Chamber of the Transport SETA and/or relevant ETQA. 3. Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. |
UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE |
The learner can understand, explain and apply:
1. The categorisation of dangerous and hazardous/dangerous goods as it pertains to the selection and utilization of handling equipment, storage facilities and securing techniques. 2. The relevant legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Pollution Control Act) and international standards pertaining to the dangerous and hazardous/dangerous goods classification, handling environment, handling method and packaging and labelling requirements. 3. Relevant information sources available to maintain awareness in the handling and storage of dangerous and hazardous/dangerous goods (e.g. IMDG code - maritime industry). 4. Protection of the environment and a basic understanding of urban waste disposal systems (e.g. sewers, separators etc). 5. The range of personal protective equipment worn during handling and storage of hazardous/dangerous freight. 6. Basic emergency care procedures, emergency support systems and services available. 7. The potential hazards of dangerous goods (e.g. toxic, corrosive, flammable/explosive substances). |
