PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner accredited with this standard will be able to apply his knowledge of international trade in the design and improvement of logistics operations and to optimise the safe and efficient movement of freight through the logistics chain. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
National Certificate in Freight Handling or equivalent at NQF level 3 or higher. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The applied competence expressed in this standard covers key aspects around international trade and the formulation of solutions to often unfamiliar problems, where such solutions are reliant on informed judgement. The learner has complete responsibility for the decisions made which effect the safe and efficient movement of freight within the international arena.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered with the FE/HE Registrar and the programs offered by this institution must be accredited with the relevant ETQA.

3. Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

The learner can understand, explain and apply:

1. The procedures in moving goods internationally by sea/air/rail/road, using different methods e.g. containers, bulk, groupage, breakbulk.

2. Other legal persona (e.g. Port authorities, Ships Agents) within the supply chain and their functions and activities.

3. Basic economics and the impact of economics on international trade.

4. The consequences of errors/omissions and why quality standards are set (e.g. conforming to ISO standards).

5. The utilisation and purpose of documentation used in international trade (e.g. LC's, BOL's, Way bills, CTO's, bills of entry, quarantine documentation, carrier regulations and other contracts of carriage etc).

6. Methods of payment, INCO terms and International Freight codes (e.g. Air Freight Codes) and their implications on risk, responsibility and costs for both the exporter and the importer.

7. Characteristics of different transport modes and the packaging, labelling options and requirements based on freight characteristics (e.g. mass, volume and physical properties) and international regulations and legislation.

8. Company policies and guidelines on international trade (if the candidate is involved in an organisation).
