PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A qualifying learner assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to supervise the harvest of indigenous plants from the veld. The value of this competence is that natural resources are harvested on a sustainable basis. This competence will equip the qualifying learner with the skills required to undertake an important role in nature conservation and will enhance employability of the qualifying learner in both nature conservation and other related jobs.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
    3. Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQAs policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation; in terms of agreements reached around assessment and moderation between ETQAs (including professional bodies); and in terms of the moderation guideline detailed under point 4 immediately below.
    4. Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard 252458, which is "Carry out the harvesting of flora", Level 2, 3 credits.

    A problem in this field is that the supervisors of harvesting seldom understand why they need to do things in particular ways. Building this understanding should therefore be a key objective of any training provider. A second problem is that the supervisors are the only people in a position to identify more effective and efficient ways of harvesting and thereby improve harvesting.

    1. Specified locality is found within a reasonable period of time.
    2. Relevant species are correctly identified by sight.
    3. Species is identified in language of harvesters.
    4. Correct species are harvested in the correct locality by means of the correct method.
    5. Harvesting is carried out according to occupational health and safety procedures.
    6. Harvesters remain in general area of harvest.
    7. Sound human relations are maintained.
    8. The harvest is accurately weighed according to the standard weighing system prescribed for each species by the employer/landowner.
    9. The harvest is accurately recorded using the system prescribed by the employer/landowner.
    10. The report must contain all the information required to maintain a harvest management system.
    11. Lessons learnt are identified and built into plans for future harvesting.
