PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is for persons who are required to take representative solid samples in a metallurgical process.
A person credited with this unit standard is able to

Demonstrate knowledge relating to the taking of representative solid samples in a metallurgical process;

Prepare to take representative samples; and
>Take representative samples.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

This competence applies to metallurgical processes in the mining industry.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Demonstrating knowledge relating to the taking of representative samples.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

1. That hazards and risks pertaining to the sampling process are identified and explained in terms of team safety, health and environmental issues, and that the appropriate preventative measures are described in accordance with specified requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

2. That the reasons for taking samples are explained in terms of production, analysis required and specified requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

3. That the principles of sampling solid material are explained with reference to obtaining a representative sample.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES

Principles must include

equipment - components and function;

size of increment;

frequency of increment;

location of sampling point.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

4. That security procedures as per specified requirements are explained.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

5. That the interlock systems and lockout procedures pertaining to the taking of samples are listed in accordance with specified requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

6. That common problems are explained in terms of their effect on the process, and that appropriate preventative or corrective actions are described in terms of specified requirements.

contamination;

sample identification;

blockage of sampling equipment;

power failures;

incorrect calibration;

lack of maintenance;

incorrect sampling equipment/method;

spillage/loss of sample; and

transport of sample.

7. That the consequences of non-compliance with specified requirements are explained with respect to personal and team health and safety, impact on the environment, production, costs and lost time.

1. That the required personal protective and safety equipment is available, operational, fit for the purpose and maintained in accordance with specified requirements.

2. That the tools and equipment to be used are identified, verified, used and maintained in accordance with specified requirements, and that the consequences of non-compliance are explained.

3. That authority to proceed with the sampling process is obtained in accordance with specified requirements.

storage.

5. That data are recorded and processed in accordance with specified requirements.

6. That the samples are processed and forwarded to the next processing step in accordance with specified requirements.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.

3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
