Furthermore, this HC qualification will address the dire need for entry level skilled personnel as articulated both formally and informally by the Advertising and Communications Association (ACA), the professional association to which the institution belongs. The assumption is that the Grade 12 learners' inability to attain the required APS is due to inter-alia, a lack of sufficient knowledge on study skills, and this qualification would address this assumed deficiency through provision of additional support and exposure to fundamental knowledge as well as life and employment skills. The qualification is aimed at individuals who would like to enter the marketing and communications industry, and be employed in a small sized design or advertising agency, perform basic design and art direction functions. More specifically, those who obtain the HC may be employed in a print shop, since they will have acquired inter-alia, Desk Top Publishing knowledge and skills. By studying the Creative Business Practice module, learners may be employed as freelance designers or even start their own small businesses offering services such as logo design, brochures/poster/banners and basic e-mailers. | INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| Internationally, very few institutions offer the Higher Certificate as a qualification type. However, they do have offer certificates and diplomas, some of which are one or two years and in most cases, the certificates are similar to the Higher Certificate. It should be noted that the description' visual' and 'creative' communication is sometimes used interchangeably; thus if a true comparison has to be made, one has to look at the curriculum of the programme and do the mapping.
The institution below (which also have campuses throughout several countries), based in Rome/Italy offers a one or two year-Certificate programme in Visual Communication, and the one year programme is akin to the HC. Miami Ad School has campuses throughout the world and they offer diploma/ certificate/portfolio programmes similar to the Higher Certificate in Visual Communications. Some academic institutions, offer a visual communications Certificate/Diploma programmes in conjunction with other degree and certificate programs, enhancing skills with its interdisciplinary nature. The coursework involved in a visual communications certificate programme typically combines specialised study in illustration, print design and web design, and the courses typically cover the following topics: Graphic design basics; Communication graphics history; Illustration concepts; Digital imaging fundamentals; Web design principles; Adobe Photoshop use. Some of these top institutions in the USA offer a one-year diploma programme which is equivalent to the Higher Certificate: Visual Communications. |

Thus, horizontal articulation pathways from the Higher Certificate to the Occupational Certificate Level 5 is possible, however, the quality assurance of the aforementioned qualifications rests with the QCTO, and not the CHE. Nevertheless, other institutions in South Africa (, as well as international institutions offer Higher Certificates and Diplomas in the creative or visual communications domain which may allow students who so wish, to articulate horizontally upon completion or midway to similar programmes. This qualification is internationally accredited by the International Association of Advertising (IAA), which makes it easier to articulate vertically and horizontally. Vertical Articulation: |
