PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to provide existing and aspiring junior managers, team leaders and supervisors with foundational management concepts, confidence and skills necessary to operate effectively at supervisory and junior management levels. Successful graduates will be equipped with the requisite management skills and knowledge needed to become effective managers at an entry management level in both a technical/functional and an intra-and interpersonal manner.

On completion of this qualification, learners will be able to apply these management skills, knowledge and values gained back into the world of work both as individuals and as members of teams. This will allow them to be eligible for more senior management positions in the future, but also allow them to move between functions should they want to focus on any specific area of management.

Rationale:
The rationale for the qualification is to provide entry level higher education qualification in management practice, and help address the dire shortage of suitably trained managers in the country and the sub-region.

The qualification is suitable for practicing junior managers and supervisors who wish to acquire formal management training, and others who are contemplating a career in management.

Successful learners can be employed as team leaders, supervisors or junior managers in governmental and non-governmental organisations. Alternatively, they would have acquired the entrepreneurial skills to run their own businesses.

It will furthermore, enable them to build a ladder of qualifications in management practice and related disciplines if they so wish. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
In terms of the School's RPL policy, students in a cohort may be admitted without the minimum Level 4 requirement if they can demonstrate, via a portfolio of evidence, that they have sufficient experience in at least 3 of the major functional areas of management.

RPL applications are assessed within the academic unit/department to certify the ability of the applicant to successfully undertake the programme.

RPL assessment is only for purposes of admission to the programme, and no exemptions are granted for modules in the programme because of the integrated nature of the programme.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum requirement for admission into the Higher Certificate is either a:
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) granting access to Higher Certificate Studies.
    Or
  • National Certificate Vocational (NCV), Level 4, granting access to Higher Certificate Studies.
    Or
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 2-3 years' work experience, and must also be proficient in English as the medium of instruction.

    This qualification comprises compulsory modules at Level 5 totalling 120 Credits.

  • Systems Thinking and Business, 30 Credits.
  • Fundamental Business Acumen, 30 Credits.
  • Working with People, 20 Credits.
  • Action Learning Activity, 20 Credits.

    1. Demonstrate working knowledge of the core requirements and foundational skills of management practice.
    2. Demonstrate the ability to identify and apply management techniques for management practice.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to research relevant information required for management practice and articulate the value of this to an appropriate audience.
    4. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes 1:
  • Explain concepts, principles and theories of management practice using simulations, case studies and examples.
  • Explain and contextualise different functional areas of management and practice and apply via workplace assignments.
  • Develop and explain an awareness of management practice as a system and body of knowledge.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes 2:
  • Demonstrate and develop the ability to make sense, problem-solve and implement solutions in familiar and new contexts via simulations and immersions in new contexts.
  • Develop and use tools to understand systems and causal relationships.
  • Use these tools in the workplace beyond the life of the programme.
  • Develop a planning and managing implementation process as a management technique in a familiar environment and apply them in the workplace via assignments and group work.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes 3:
  • Explain the idea of accessing, processing and managing information by gathering data from various sources using examples and simulations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate data and carry them out as applied practice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce and communicate information and findings reliably, accurately and coherently and practice in groups.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes 4:
  • Take responsibility for one's own learning and promote the learning of others, particularly in group work and in natural teams in the workplace.
  • Develop, practice and apply the ability to demonstrate accountability for one's own actions in an ethical and professional manner in group work and in the workplace.
  • Develop, evaluate and apply the ability to work effectively with others and taking responsibility for others.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The range of assessment instruments used for the Higher Certificate in Management Practice includes both formative and summative assessment, and comprises portfolios, simulations and case studies, individual assignments and position papers, reflective papers, group presentations, and written examinations.

    Assessment instruments for the individual modules of the qualification are as follows:
  • Individual position paper (summative) - 50%.
  • Individual reflective paper (formative) - 30%.
  • Group assignment (formative) - 10%.
  • Case-study based summative examination - 10%.

    Assessment of the Action Learning module is as follows:
  • Individual portfolio/reflective paper (formative) - 60%.
  • Group project and presentation (summative) - 40%.

    This qualification is compared against the following international sources, where the outcomes and assessment criteria, degree of difficulty and notional learning time has been compared:
  • Certificate of Higher Education in Business Management, The Open University, United Kingdom.

  • Certificate in Business Studies, University of new Zealand.

    Conclusion:
    The qualification is therefore appropriately comparable to the international qualifications cited.
