PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with specialized knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of plant production management (horticulture), that provide for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

Rationale:
The second purpose of this qualification is to provide Southern Africa with agricultural specialists who will have a clear and continuously growing understanding of the basic principles of horticulture (plant production), and in particular the management of fruit and ornamentals in different production systems and the factors influencing their quality. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Institutional Agriculture Honours, Level 8.
    Or
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Agriculture, Level 8.
    Or
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Agronomy and/or Horticulture, Level 8.
    Or
  • An equivalent Degree at Level 8.

  • Advanced quantitative and analytical skills as it relates to economic applications.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of all aspects of agricultural economics, including farm management, production economics, resource economics, agricultural marketing, agricultural and rural finance and agricultural policy.
  • Knowledge of agricultural institutions and systems.
  • Problem solving ability through economic applications in natural and biological resources.
  • In-depth knowledge of the problems in agronomy.
  • An understanding of group dynamics.
  • Ability to negotiate and plan strategically.
  • Knowledge of research methodology and the ability to apply it successfully.
  • Identify a relevant topic for research.
  • Identify research problem.
  • Do survey and analyse and present results in a logical fashion.
  • Theoretical basis for problem solving in natural and biological resources.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Assessment will include written, oral and practical examinations and a mini-dissertation moderated by internal and external assessors.
  • Seminars, assignments, practical's, excursions and projects, with subsequent reporting, will also be assessed.
