PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to train and equip learners with advanced knowledge and skills to become critical, reflective and innovative professional Industrial/Organisational Psychologists in a culturally diverse workforce able to:
  • Apply advanced knowledge to organisational and human resource aspects including labour relations as well as workplace wellbeing.
  • Apply advanced knowledge and skills regarding organisational development with a strong focus on human resources and labour relation dynamics, leadership, teamwork, diversity and inclusion as well as talent management.
  • Apply and critically appraise psychological assessments with insight into the dynamics of a culturally diverse workforce.
  • Apply specialised knowledge regarding the development, implementation and evaluation of positive psychological workplace interventions.
  • Apply advanced and nuanced counselling skills to enhance employee wellbeing and organisation performance as well as being able to identify serious psychological illness in need of appropriate psychological referrals.

    Rationale:
    The Master of Social Science in Industrial and Organisation Psychology is to provide excellent professional training in Industrial and Organisational Psychology that integrates related theory and practice to enhance human performance and quality of life in organisation contexts aligned with the scope of practice for Industrial and Organisational Psychologists as outlined by the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA). 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The principles underlying outcomes-based, source-based and life-long learning, in which considerations of articulation and mobility play a significant role are subscribed. Recognition of Prior Learning, whether acquired by formal education curricula at any institution or informally (by experience) is an indispensable element in deciding on admission to and awarding credits in an explicitly selected qualification.

    An applicant who falls outside of the formal qualifications system, but who can demonstrate (through the production of substantial and satisfactory evidence) experiential or work-based learning or a non-formal qualification (or a combination), may be considered for admission and/or for the Recognition of Prior Learning for the achievement of the qualification in part or in full.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Cognate Bachelor Honours Degree, Level 8.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Critically analyse the theory, research, contextual and intellectual history of human resource development methods by reading the necessary scientific literature.
  • Critically analyse the literature related to a specific topic and apply own understandings to themes.
  • Conduct research on a chosen topic and produce a written report on the findings.
  • Present research findings to a range of groups using appropriate media, language and terminology.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The learning outcomes in general will be assessed through a number of assessment processes. This will include written seminar assignments, class presentations, discussions, debates, problem-based learning opportunities directed at personal and co-construction of knowledge, and critical engagement with theoretical foundations of research.

    Learners' ability to critically engage with psychological assessment issues will be demonstrated in class debates on contemporary issues at both local and global levels and will be appraised by both peers and module coordinator(s) and/or lecturers. Further, the ability of learners to apply their knowledge in the planning of conducting psychological assessments will be assessed.

    Assessments for different settings will be done through group presentations of class work. Feedback from peers and lecturers on the written assignment and presentation will be given and an opportunity will be given to improve on the final dissertation. Feedback guidelines will assist in this process. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows possibilities for both vertical and horizontal articulation.

  • Master of Economics in Industrial Psychology, Level 9.
  • Master of Industrial Psychology, Level 9.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Psychology, Level 10.
