| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
This qualification is a specialist qualification preparing leaners for further Postgraduate studies in Sport Medicine. The institution aims at providing high level education and skilled professionals in the field of medicine to make a contribution to the health and well-being of the nation. Rationale: The qualification addresses the needs of the local society. In the country and internationally a need has been identified by Doctors for proficiency in the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine, and specifically for Postgraduate training in Sport and Exercise Medicine. This has been brought about by the international paradigm shift from curative medicine to healthy lifestyle and preventative health care, which cannot be ignored. The qualification provides high level education for skilled professionals in the field of medicine to make a contribution to the health and well-being of the nation. Sport has become a major activity of thousands of members of our society and through this qualification a contribution will be made to the welfare and health of our people. Furthermore, the benefit of exercise in prevention and risk reversal of chronic disease has been established and will be promoted in the community by leaners of this qualification. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Where learners do not meet the minimum admission requirements, RPL may be used to grant access to the qualification. RPL will be applied according to the Recognition of Prior Learning, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, and Assessment policy. This will relate to both access to the qualification as well as for credit recognition or exemption towards achieving the qualification. The institution will ensure that quality assurance processes that address the specificities of the RPL process (including applications, assessment, and reporting and management systems) are implemented; and that administrative and support systems, both prior and subsequent to RPL assessment, are in place. | This qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 9 totalling 300 Credits.

| 1. Apply the principles of sport and exercise medicine in general practice.
2. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, professional thinking, behaviour and attitudes required for the prevention, diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of sports related injuries and illness. 3. Efficiently diagnose, manage, rehabilitate and prevent exercise-related injuries and illness. 4 Utilise and promote the role of physical activity in the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness and disease and administer comprehensive, lifestyle prescriptions on physical, nutritional, mental and occupational level. 5. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, professional thinking, behaviour and attitudes required for the physical rehabilitation of patients with cardiac and other chronic diseases in order to minimise risk of recurrence, improve medical management of these conditions, and improve quality of life. 6. Optimise sports performance in athletes at all levels utilising medical, nutritional, psychological, physiological and physical tools. |
| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
Integrated Assessment: Competency will be proved by demonstration of stated outcomes to comply with standards set by the institution. Efficiency and effectiveness in the achievement of stated outcomes and general performance in sports and exercise medicine and as researcher will be assessed. Leaners will be required to offer proof of competency through various means, including case portfolios, discussions, assignments, practical demonstrations and concept scientific articles. Skills will be assessed in real settings. The research project will be assessed in accordance with the General Rules of the institution related to research. Assessments in the qualification will follow an integrated and continuous approach. Assessments of practical work and elective periods will be through negotiated or contracted work in the field of sports and exercise medicine. |
