PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
To prepare the learner for practice as an enrolled nurse in a comprehensive health care system.
To facilitate professional enrolment as a nurse with the South African Nursing Council; thereby legalising practice as an enrolled nurse. The programme is designed to contribute to the provision of enrolled nurses to be in line with the health care needs of the South African Society. To add value to the learner in terms of further personal development in life skills and increased status. |

Specific outcomes:
On completion of the programme the learner should demonstrate the following essential outcomes: 1. Apply the scientific approach and provide holistic care, planned and initiated by the registered nurse, to the individual/groups with particular reference to basic health needs at any point along the health/illness continuum. 2. Demonstrate throughout the life span an awareness for basic human rights related to basic nursing care. 3. Render nursing care within the legal-ethical framework under direct or indirect supervision of the registered nurse. 4. Develop interpersonal skills and an awareness for her/his role within the multidisciplinary team and within a comprehensive health care system. 5. Utilise the principles of education and learning in providing information regarding the basic health needs of the individual and family in a multi-cultural community. 6. Develop an awareness for the principles of ward management to render cost-effective quality nursing care. Critical cross-field outcomes: Because the critical cross-field outcomes prescribed by SAQA are integral to the process of nursing education, they are potentially embedded in all the specific outcomes. In the above outcomes the emphases are as follows: On completion of the programme the competencies of learners will include: 1. Problem solving, critical and creative thinking: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an enrolled nurse. 2. Working effectively as a member of a team: This outcome is embedded in specific outcome 1, 4 and 5. 3. Self-organisation and management: This outcome is embedded in specific outcomes 3 and 6. 4. Information processing: This outcome is embedded in specific outcome 1, 5. 5. Communicating effectively: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an enrolled nurse. 6. Effective and critical use of science and technology: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as enrolled nurse. 7. Demonstrating a systemic understanding of the world: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an enrolled nurse. 8. Reflecting on and exploring learning strategies: This outcome is embedded in specific outcome 5. 9. Participating as citizens in social life: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes through the practice of nursing. 10. Being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in which learners will identify and respond to the needs of a diverse group of health care users. 11. Exploring education and career opportunities: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme. Learners will identify their personal learning needs for further development. 12. Developing entrepreneurial opportunities: This outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme because the learner is prepared to function as an enrolled nurse. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
The criteria for assessing learners are based on the learning outcomes listed above and the strategies that will be used to ensure that the specific and critical cross-field outcomes are achieved comprise:
Formative assessment by means of: Written tests. Assessment of clinical nursing skills and performance. Assessment of assignments and nursing rounds. Summative evaluation by means of: Written examinations -conducted by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Clinical examination. |
ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
Credits obtained at other nursing colleges/nursing schools for the corresponding programme are recognised for this qualification in collaboration with SANC regulations.
Exit from this programme after successful completion of certain credits, qualifies the learner for professional enrolment as a nursing auxiliary with the South African Nursing Council. Exit from this qualification, after successful completion of the required credits, qualifies the learner for entrance to the diploma in General Nursing Science. Learners who are enrolled with the South African Nursing Council as a nursing auxiliary will be allowed to enter in mid-stream. Such learners will be granted exemption from certain modules on condition that the number of credits from which the learner is exempted does not exceed 120 credits. |
