PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The qualification comprises one module, which is a thesis based on a topic approved by the Department of English. The doctoral thesis is a more demanding research paper than the MA dissertation and must be the learner's original contribution to knowledge. It covers a broader field and shows a more profound sense of perspective and the learner's understanding of essential theoretical issues relevant to the topic in question.

Because successful completion of a doctoral thesis in literary studies requires that the learner should demonstrate extensive and intensive knowledge of the subject being researched, as well as an ability to present a unified, cumulative argument, characterised by sound critical and aesthetic/cultural sensibility and thorough scholarly research, the emphasis is on mental and intellectual training as well as the enhancement of disciplined behaviour. Through the cerebral and behavioural improvement brought about by the nature of its requirements, a Doctoral Degree in literary studies opens up career possibilities in the following fields: publishing, editing, public relations, television & radio, tourism, advertising, journalism, internet writing, education, public service, research, and cultural conservation.
