PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with knowledge, skills, professional thinking behaviour and attitude to function as a nurse both in hospital and community settings.

Secondary purpose:
To provide the South African community with nurses who will:
  • Fulfil the need of the service in rural community and hospital settings;
  • Identify basic needs in a community client and hospital based patient;
  • Provide health education to client according to identified needs related to activities of daily living. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners who register for this qualification can:
  • Have grade 10;
  • Learn from written material, class attendance and community exposure.

    Recognition of prior learning:

    This qualification recognises prior learning based on criterion referenced assessment for:
  • Exposure to nursing as ward aids;
  • First aid course;
  • Community health worker;
  • Aids councillors;
  • Home care or any related course or activity to nursing.

    Specific Outcomes:

    1. Recognise basic needs across lifespan for families, individual, communities.

    2. Develop skills in observation and assessment.

    3. Applies steps of nursing process/scientific process in relation to basic individual needs to all age groups.

    4. Demonstrate developed positive attitude, effective communication and listening skills across lifespan.

    5. Identify medico legal hazard in health.

    Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Manage normal basic needs across the lifespan using interpersonal and psychomotor skills.

    2. Communicate effectively using visual or language skills in oral or written presentations in professional practice.

    3. Work effectively with others as member of a team, group, organisation and community.

    Assessment criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    1. Relates learning joined from experience by providing appropriate nursing care as per individual need.

    2. Take history and interview patients.

    3. Attend to all basic needs of living of an individual e.g. hygiene, elimination, nutrition etc.

    4. Give health education.
  • Ability to listen to problems of individuals and act promptly according to her scope of practice or refer.

    5. Apply preventive measures of medico-legal hazards relevant in the setting where she or he is functioning.

    Assessment criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Perform basic nursing skills effectively to meet different needs of individual.

    2. Give health education effectively.
  • Recognise own communication limitations and problems, and seek help appropriately.

    3. Show evidence of skills in group situations e.g. tolerance, empathy, listening.
  • Demonstrate respect for the opinion of others through written or oral reporting.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    1. Continuous assessment by unit personnel and teaching personnel using assessment tool.

    2. Formative and summative assessment are integrated by using tests and assignments.
    Formative - includes: Tests, Projects, Clinical evaluation, Clinical book, accompaniment.

    Summative - includes: Internal and external examination, curricula evaluation and tool to evaluate the course. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The qualification is equivalent to the first year of the enrolled course.
    Upon completion of the course, an option to continue with the next level for enrolled nursing is possible. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners is used within the institution.
    The SANC provides its own system of moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
  • Our own staff is used as assessor for the practica.
  • SANC provides the written external examination papers and assesses/marks the papers.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
