Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This Masters Degree may be obtained in one of two ways viz.
  • By thesis, the topic of which must be agreed upon jointly by the learner and the Head of the Department.
  • Course work and a mini-dissertation, the topic of which must be agreed upon jointly by the learner and the Head of the Department.

    The purpose of this qualification is to train applied statisticians who will be able to work as academics at both universities and other tertiary institutions in this country. As such they will be able to lecture in both Applied Statistics and Statistics and will be able to work as researchers in these disciplines. These statisticians will also be able to work in any sector of the South African economy. They would be able to work in Health related fields and many Government Departments.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of prior learning:

    An Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics or any other indication of sufficient prior learning that can be demonstrated and assessed.

    The expected exit level outcomes will be:

    1. Knowledge and experience of research methodology

    2. Knowledge and understanding of chosen modules

    3. Knowledge and understanding of the learners chosen field of research

    5. Competency in the use of suitable statistical software. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria:

    Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learners knowledge of the chosen fields of study and on his/her mini-dissertation. The qualifier will:

    1. Apply the correct methodology to a given problem

    2. Use the correct statistical procedures to use in a given circumstance

    3. Be familiar with this field of research and have done a literature survey

    4. Use the most appropriate software for the given problem

    Alternatively if the learner has opted to do the masters degree by dissertation only, then it will be this dissertation that will be assessed.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Some horizontal articulation with MSc. (Mathematical Statistics)

    Vertical articulation will be possible for those qualifiers who wish to proceed with a doctorate. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Co-supervisors will be appointed when necessary.
    Internal moderators or second examiners will be appointed when possible.
    Suitably qualified external examiners with experience in the required areas. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Experience of teaching the subject at this level and a PhD qualification.
    Evidence of research and some publications would be an advantage.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
