PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the necessary knowledge and skills, professional thinking, behaviour and attitudes to be able to provide and facilitate general nursing care, primary health care and community health care, within their scope of practice.

To provide people with grade 10 or 12 certificates the opportunity to begin a career in Health care, especially those whose school subjects keep them from training as registered nurses.

To provide these people the opportunity to commence with training in Health care as enrolled nurses and then onwards to registered nurses. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Recognition of prior learning:

Recognition of prior learning based on criterion referenced assessment for:
  • Learners with health care related experience;
  • Learners with accredited nursing or nursing experience.

    Methods of assessment:
  • Interview - to clarify issues raised in documentary evidence presented by the learner/applicant;
  • Written test - to test understanding of basic skills and their application;
  • Performance test - to determine level of skills.

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Obtaining the certificate of auxiliary nurse may give the candidate access to the programme for the certificate of enrolled nurse, which is offered at various Nursing education institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners within the institution will be used, together with a system of external examination at the exit level to the qualification - provided by the SANC. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they will also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Our own registered staff will be used as assessors in a manner accommodated within the quality management system of the institution. This would apply to outside assessors also, e.g. staff of 1 Military hospital, where we send the pupil auxiliary nurses for part of the practical learning. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
