The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification aims to demonstrate specialised knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a natural science discipline that provides opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.
This qualification also aims to provide South Africa with significant numbers of postgraduates in Natural Science discipline in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is widened. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Structural Biology,NQF Level 8.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
    1. Display specialised scholastic and advanced research skills in natural science, and perform a full range of advanced procedures in complex, variable and highly specialised contexts.
    2. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of the natural science discipline, process abstract data and concepts at a level of analysis, transformation and evaluation and create responses to resolve abstract Natural Science problems.
    3. Demonstrate oral and written modes of communication with appropriate structure, style and graphics support are demonstrated effectively in the broader natural science community.
    4. Demonstrate responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing within broad parameters and functions.
    5. Optimise personal and group output by complete accountability for its determination, achievement and evaluation.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Assessment may consist of any of the following combinations:
  • A thesis.
  • A thesis and an oral examination.
  • A thesis and written papers.
  • A thesis and an oral and a written examination.

    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.
