| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The purpose of the learning programme is to train the learner with the necessary knowledge and skills which will enable him/her to get employment in the tourism industry of which travel agency, tourism bureaus, wine farms and public relations are only a few careers.The travel industry is a very competitive but growing industry in South Africa. To keep up with these changing trends, relevant training in this field will definitely contribute to the regional and national goals.In the region are other institutions offering training in the tourism field. In comparison to these institutions, our course structure is unique, because we offer IATA/UFTAA as well as Galileo, Public Relations, Communication and DTS as part of the course, which forms a more complete qualification.Being a provider in tourism and tourist guide training for the past 10 years, we are very fortunate to have staff members not only with teaching experience, but also with vast practical expertise. This ensures close relations with the business sector to ensure relevant training.
Rationale for the qualification The programme was designed some years ago in conjunction with local commerce and industry. Annual meetings with the programme liaison committee are used to revise and update the content of the modules in line with current practice in the programme field. For the past two years we have also aligned the programme to technikon requirements in order for articulation of our learners to take place.A career in tourism allows for great diversity as well as specialisation. Learners are trained as technicians, technologists, managers and entrepreneurs. Primary employment sectors are: accommodation / hospitality, distribution channels, travel facilitators (eg. Travel Agents), transportation (eg. Airlines), attractions / resources and destination planning, management and coordination (eg. regional tourism organisations) and marketing. |

| No prior learning in this field is required for entrance to the qualification. Certain units, when the qualification have pre-requisite units, are covered first.
Recognition of prior learning Recognition of prior learning forms an integral part of the structure of the programmes at the College. Learners are RPL`ed for studies successfully completed at universities, technikons and state colleges as well as private colleges accredited by SAQA, CHE or a SETA.Learners who can demonstrate that they have applicable practical experience in a travel agency, good administrative, communicative and computer skills may be registered on this programme or specific applicable modules. |

| Durbanville College will not attempt to develop critical cross-field and specific outcomes, but will adopt those developed by the Tourism SGB`s and published by SAQA which are relevant to this programme.
On achieving this qualification. The learner will be able to: The programmes are further enriched with the following offerings not specially addressed in TSDO5 and TSD15: Optional: Evaluation of cross-field and specific outcomes Until the whole NQ system has been finalised and implemented, the Durbanville College will, as far as internal evaluation is concerned, maintain present forms of evaluation. Resource center utilisation: Learners must include a bibliography with all projects indicating resources consulted, whether reference material of the College or another source.Experiential learning:Experiential learning is an integral part of the programme. Learners are assisted by the College to find suitable workstations. A well structured Log-book, which gets signed by the learner, employer and college lecturer, is in use to ensure control over the actual work experience gained by the learner. Projects: Group, individual and external evaluation of projects takes place. Also hands-on experience where specific projects can be generated, eg. a Public Relations campaign for the local travel agency. |
| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| The programme compares favourably with similar international programmes based on comparison of brochures. Learners who have worked overseas, especially in Britain, report that they are very well qualified for comparable job opportunities.The travel programme is highly comparable in that three modules (IATA/UFTAA, Galileo and BSP) are international qualifications incorporated into the programme. |
| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| On completion of this qualification, besides careers in the formal travel industry, learners may also be employed as Public Relations Practitioners, Receptionists, Secretaries, Private Assistants and Computer Operators. |
