PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the learning programme is to train the learner with the necessary knowledge and skills which will enable him/her to get employment in the tourism industry of which travel agency, tourism bureaus, wine farms and public relations are only a few careers.

The travel industry is a very competitive but growing industry in South Africa. To keep up with these changing trends, relevant training in this field will definitely contribute to the regional and national goals.

In the region are other institutions offering training in the tourism field. In comparison to these institutions, our course structure is unique, because we offer IATA/UFTAA as well as Galileo, Public Relations, Communication, DTS (international ticketing) and BSP as part of the course, which forms a more complete qualification.

Being a provider in tourism and tourist guide training for the past 10 years, we are very fortunate to have staff members not only with teaching experience, but also with vast practical expertise. This ensures close relations with the business sector to ensure relevant training.

Rationale for the qualification

The programme was designed some years ago in conjunction with local commerce and industry. Annual meetings with the programme liaison committee are used to revise and update the content of the modules in line with current practice in the programme field. For the past two years we have also aligned the programme to technikon requirements in order for articulation of our learners to take place.

A career in tourism allows for great diversity as well as specialisation. Learners are trained as technicians, technologists, managers and entrepreneurs. Primary employment sectors are: accommodation / hospitality, distribution channels, travel facilitators (eg. Travel Agents), transportation (eg. Airlines), attractions / resources and destination planning, management and coordination (eg. regional tourism organisations) tourist guiding, events management and marketing.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners must be able to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills, gained through studying the Certificate in Public Relations and Travel Agency, to continue to this level of training.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning forms an integral part of the structure of the programmes at the College. Learners are RPL`ed for studies successfully completed at universities, technikons and state colleges as well as private colleges accredited by SAQA, CHE or a SETA.

Learners who can demonstrate good computer, interpersonal and communication skills and provide proof of applicable administrative and computer experience in the tourism industry, may be registered for some diploma level and some certificate level modules.

A well structured Log-book, which gets signed by the learner, employer and college lecturer, is in use to ensure control over the actual work experience gained by the learner.

    Projects:
Group, individual and external evaluation of projects takes place. Also hands-on experience where specific projects can be generated, eg. a practical tour for the local old aged home.

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The programme compares favourably with similar international programmes based on comparison of brochures. Learners who have worked overseas, especially in Britain, report that they are very well qualified for comparable job opertunities.
