PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to provide veterinary and public health services with Registered Veterinary Technologists in specialised units, diagnostic laboratories, research centres, state, private or education sectors, who can function independently and perform a supervisory function.

The qualifying learner will have competence in specialised field/s of veterinary technology and related disciplines, aspects of quality management and research. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
First degree in Veterinary Technology with a minimum of 360 credits or other equivalent and relevant qualifications and/or experience.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
Exit level outcome:

1. Select, perform, organize and integrate diagnostic techniques in specific veterinary fields, in accordance with statutory requirements.

2. Critically evaluate methods and trends in technology in selected fields of veterinary science.

3. Manage quality assurance programmes/plans

4. Supervise the application of the Code of Ethics and safety and health legislation

5. Manage resources effectively and efficiently

6. Conduct research in a selected discipline under supervision of a project leader.

Specified outcomes:

1.1. Demonstrate extended knowledge in specific disciplines in the veterinary field. (C).

1.2 Supervise and perform specialized tests of samples for diagnostic and/or research purposes in specific disciplines. (C).

1.3 Critically evaluate and interpret results of laboratory tests, through the application of extended and greater in-depth knowledge of selected disciplines. (C).

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1.1. Principles of diagnostic techniques and procedures in a selected discipline of veterinary are explained and/or demonstrated and evaluated in the specific veterinary field.
  • Advanced techniques are described, explained, integrated and applied appropriately.

    1.2. Sampling and testing of necropsy specimens, external and internal parasites, clinical and environmental samples are selected, coordinated performed and moderated appropriately.
  • Reference collections of necropsy specimens, external and internal parasites, clinical and environmental samples are selected, coordinated and moderated correctly.
  • Advanced identification of Microbiological organisms and internal and external parasites are performed.

    1.3. Laboratory test-results are evaluated through correlation with standard laboratory controls, literature and research.
  • Appropriate additional laboratory tests are recommended for diagnostic information.

    2.1 Current and appropriate information is obtained, correlated, analysed and synthesized in clear and coherent reports/projects.

    3.1. Ways of monitoring and implementation of quality assurance plans are explained.
  • Quality control in the workplace is supervised.

    4.1 Adequate records are kept in terms of current legislation and regulations.
  • Non-conformance to the Code of Ethics, and relevant Acts and Regulations are noted and corrective action taken.

    5.1. A budget of laboratory research and diagnostics is determined, compiled and managed.
  • An effective business plan is drawn up.

    6.1. Resources are applied effectively to obtain information.
  • An appropriate protocol is compiled.
  • Results are reported according to scientific norms.

    Integrated assessment:

    Theory and laboratory practice are assessed in written, oral and practical examinations, tests and assignments as individuals and/or as part of a team. Learners have to integrate their own knowledge and skills in producing research protocols, projects and reports. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation with M Tech: Veterinary Technology.
    Lateral articulation with B Degree in Veterinary Science (at University), with entrance at NQF 5, 240 credit level. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered and appointed by the provider according to existing moderation guidelines of the HEQC or relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the HEQC or relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the HEQC or relevant ETQA, according to the HEQC or relevant ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation should also validate the achievement of competencies and assessment processes as described in exit level outcomes and integrated assessment options as described in the qualification. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • Interpersonal skills, subject matter expertise and relevant working experience.
  • To be competent in the planning and conducting of assessments of learning outcomes.

    The assessor must have completed:
  • A similar qualification or from the same family of qualifications, at or above the level of the qualification.
  • A minimum experience within the relevant field.

    The subject matter experience of the assessor can be established by recognition of prior learning.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.
