PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The primary objective of the qualification is to provide B.A. Honours Degree graduates with the opportunity to develop and apply systematic knowledge, specialized skills and theoretical competence to prepare them for employment and specialist training at an advanced level.

The second objective of the qualification is to provide South African (and other countries) with graduates who have in-depth knowledge and the confidence to identify and define complex problems and to apply their skills in finding solutions to those problems, especially within unfamiliar contexts.

The third objective of the qualification is to provide South Africa (and other countries) with people who can demonstrate that they have the ability to perform independently as intellectual leaders in their society.

Rationale:

The programme has been developed to provide an education for a junior designer who is capable of working at a high level in the global fashion environment.

A qualifying learner will make a contribution through research to the application and evaluation of existing knowledge of an area of fashion in order to further professional growth and personal development.

Career opportunities that are available to graduates are fashion designer, clothing designer, fashion retail management, fashion buyer, fashion merchandiser, media wardrobe designer, fashion trend analysist, fashion stylist, fashion journalist.

The programme contributes to regional and national goals in a variety of ways including:
  • Broadening access to and success in Higher Education through flexible entry and fixed exit standards and through the inclusion of academic support components.
  • Inclusion of certain generic competencies.
  • Encouragement of social responsibility.
  • Ensuring that students will be employable on graduation, but at the same time will have the knowledge base to continue with further learning. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    To enroll for this qualification, potential learners need to demonstrate the following competencies:
  • The ability to write essays.
  • The ability to develop an argument that is supported by evidence.
  • The ability to engage with and critique the ideas of their peers in a constructive manner.
  • The ability to reflect on their own learning experience and to use this to improve the quality of their own work.
  • The ability to design, plan and execute a basic research task based on theoretical framework, to reflect on their own research and to report on research findings.
  • The ability to search for, access, organize and interpret information.
  • The ability to discuss, problematise and investigate fashion design.
  • Know the meaning of, and be able to provide definitions for terminology and theoretical constructs used in fashion and to be able to use these correctly.
  • The ability to design and manufacture three dimensional objects to an appropriate level.
  • The ability to understand the various areas of fashion business and it's implications on the individual and global industry.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:
  • Learners who demonstrate competency in all exit level outcomes on the strength of their prior learning are awarded the B.A. Degree. Learners who demonstrate competency in parts of the programme at the exit level or at a level below the exit level are given an RPL exemption for those subject outcomes they can satisfy after being subjected to one or a combination of the assessment tools utilized.
  • The approach to the Recognition of Prior Learning ensures credible assessment through the applicant's provision of assessable evidence and quality on the basis of the requirements for the qualification. Various methods and instruments of assessment are used following a credible assessment process including academic and industry professionals who moderate the applicant's submission.

    Formal Prior Learning
  • Students need a B.A. Degree in Fashion Design (minimum 360 credits) to register for the B.A. Honours Degree in Fashion Design.
  • Students prior accredited learning at tertiary level in relevant domains which constitute credit-bearing units is recognized.

    Non-formal and informal prior experiential learning.
  • Students will be given RPL for individual modules if they can produce a portfolio of evidence or undergo any other recognized means of assessment that shows they meet the outcomes and associated assessment criteria specified for that module in line with the Academy RPL policy. 

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING? 

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    Level, Credits and Learning Components assigned to Qualifications.

    There is a minimum of 120 credits awarded for the qualification.

    It is required that students must satisfy minimum standards in all competencies to be awarded the qualification.

    Fundamental Learning: 70 credits
  • Areas of learning that relate to that which forms the grounding for further learning include elements relating to Dissertation research, development and critical thinking that will form a foundation for further study at Masters level.

    Core Learning: 50 credits
  • Forms the compulsory learning required to meet the qualification outcomes and include elements of the Internship, Portfolio and Collection modules.

    Elective: 0 credits
  • There are no electives available to learners of the programme. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Discuss and present evidence of their ability to work successfully in the fashion industry.
    2. Demonstrate their ability in the design process by producing a body of portfolio work.
    3. Demonstrate their ability to critically analyze a selected area of art and design in relation to fashion through a self-determined investigative body of work.
    4. Demonstrate their individual understanding of the relevance of design and technology through the production of a creative, well researched and planned garment collection.
    5. Demonstrate their ability to work and produce required outcomes in a professional manner.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes:

    The cross-field outcomes are divided into three key outcomes:
  • Knowledge and Skills.
  • Tasks and Procedures.
  • Autonomy and Responsibility.

    > Knowledge and Skills refers to the student's intellectual skills - quality skills and a capability profile with reference to art, design and fashion research and analytical skills.
    >Tasks and Procedures refers to creativity, subject specific and professional skills relating to the student's ability within business studies, product manufacture, drawing, fabrication and practical design.
    > Autonomy and Responsibility refers to general transferable, personal and social skills, relating to time management, working with others, self-evaluation, communication, CAD/CAM, unfamiliar technologies, working independently and on deadline, innovation and inventiveness.

    Through all three levels of the programme the criteria are linked to module element outcomes and assessments which are assessed in various forms at least twice a year in an incremental or staged manner at each level using a Curriculum Map to plan and monitor implementation and achievement. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1.
  • The integration of knowledge learned for successful outcomes in all areas of the programme with special reference to the internship.
  • Independently produce design solutions which combine invention with practicability and efficiency in the area of technology.

    2.
  • Development of a range of well executed imaginative and creative visual works through the basic adaptation of visual information that are original, aesthetically sensitive, market aware and contemporary.
  • Demonstration of acceptable levels of media handling.

    3.
  • Research and analysis of appropriate standards of knowledge and ability with regard to design and contemporary awareness and the purpose and function of design.
  • Use of research techniques to level standards and the production of a broad range of researched ideas to support proposals.
  • Work produced must be located within the range of contemporary design issues.

    4.
  • Produce acceptable standards in the presentation of work as visible in the development and outcomes of design briefs and three dimensional products and texts.
  • Deal with negotiated proposals in imaginative and inquisitive ways, taking into account parameters such as economy, practicality and available technology.
  • Production of a broad range of well researched and imaginative ideas to support proposals.

  • Illustrate a progression of ideas toward the final solution.

    Integrated Assessment:

    The range of assessment methods reflects the requirements of the various elements and teaching and learning approaches of the course and are based on formative and summative assessment with diagnostic assessment being used where required.
  • Diagnostic Assessment:

    Diagnostic Assessment provides an indication of a students aptitude and preparedness for a programme of study and identified learning issues, and is also applied to applications for RPL.
  • Formative Assessment:

    This assessment is completed during the course of study and used to determine the students understanding or ability of current work. These assessments are undertaken at differing intervals and form part of the assessment of a module element.

    Formative assessment can be made up of tests, competence-based systems or other mastery methods as required. Marks retained by the lecturer are used when assessing final results where necessary.

    Methods of Formative Assessment:

    Any of the following methods of formative assessment are utilized within the programme:

    Structured feed-back sessions; focus groups; self-research; logbooks; tutorials; questionnaires and surveys; shadowing; informal chats; one minute methods; student diaries; suggestion boxes/books.
  • Summative Assessment:

    The aim of summative assessment is to sum up what the student can do and is done against a checklist of skills and/or competencies, as well as to grade the student by using the marks obtained in each element of assessment.

    The mark gained in each module is then converted to it's weighted percentage placing the module mark in relation to it's importance with reference to the course outcomes as a whole.

    The student is assessed on the development of their intellectual and imaginative powers, understanding and intropersonal, organizational and management skills and to perceive their field of study in a broader perspective. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
  • The qualification meets the Honours Degree requirements for the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth countries as well as most of Europe, U.S.A. and Asia.
  • All assessed work is verified by Nottingham Trent University, U.K. in an annual formal Quality Audit on the programme. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation with Masters Degree level programmes through South African public institutions and international service providers is available to learners. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    All assessments are moderated by an internal moderator using various methods of moderation. All final submissions or exit level work is also externally moderated by two external examiners sourced from South African Higher Education Institutions, one of whom visits the programme quarterly to view in-process work. Final submissions of all modules are moderated on an annual basis, the procedure of which is verified by an academic peer from Nottingham Trent University, U.K.

    Internal moderators are sourced from appropriate academic staff who have been coached through a series fo workshops on assessment strategies and the standards required at each level of study. Due to the small numbers all submissions work is double marked using the 'blind marking' process where possible.

    External Examiners/Moderators are required to have a Masters Degree in Fashion or equivalent qualification. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • Interpersonal skills, subject matter expertise and relevant working experience.
  • To be competent in the planning and conducting of assessments of learning outcomes.

    The assessor must have completed:
  • A similar qualification or from the same family of qualifications, at or above the level of the qualification.
  • A minimum experience within the relevant field.

    The subject matter experience of the assessor can be established by recognition of prior learning.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.
