Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the ability:
  • To distinguish the visual requirements in sport.
  • To suggest sport vision correction.
  • To have knowledge and skills in testing of visual performance.
  • To demonstrate reflexive competencies in management of sports vision in practice.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Applied competence as outcomes:

    Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to:
  • Understanding and disseminate relevant literature on a level 7 (NQF).
  • Apply theory in the practise, scientific field and everyday life.
  • Perform scientific research at a post-graduate level.

    Recognition of prior learning:

    A learner who claims to have achieved entry requirements through experiental learning will be assessed. If the learner is found to be competent, the learner may gain:
  • Access.
  • Advanced placement.
  • Or recognition of certificate status will be granted on condition of continuing education.

    Rules of Access:

    Learners with a qualification in optometry (B Optom, Dipl Optom) as registered optometric practitioners would be gaining access. Learners with other qualifications in sport, psychology or related field would be required to complete the set modules in the Optometry programme.

    Total number of credits:
  • 200

    Minimum credits required at specific levels or maximum credits where these exceed the minima specified:

    Level 7:
  • Fundamental modules: 60
  • Core modules: 140

    The learners will be capable of independently demonstrating:

    1. The identification a visual related problems in sport and promote solving by improving visual requirements in sports.

    2. Work effectively with all stakeholders to promote effective vision in sports.

    3. Designing, organising and managing of their interventions in a practice as well as in the community.

    4. Skills as a consultant who can integrate scientific knowledge with clinical insight to diagnose and manage visual and ocular disorders.

    5. Communication skills in effectively improving the visual aspects involved in sports.

    6. The use of science and technology effectively for promoting the assessment and eye care of participants in sport.

    7. An understanding of the world as a set of related systems, so as to create awareness of the need to co-operate with all the sectors within the community to bring about positive change.

    8. Reflecting on and exploring various strategies in the practice, fieldwork, internet and other sources, to learn more effectively.

    9. A contribution in society in general but specifically as a sports vision practitioner.

    10. A recognition and understanding of the multicultural local, national and global communities and to participate as a responsible citizen.

    11.A contribution to the full range of opportunities in the optometric and specifically sports environment.

    12. An ability to develop entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of optometry and sports science as well as coaching. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The learners can:

    1.
  • Identify visual related problems in sports.

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:
  • Learners will continuously be assessed during modules via informal and formal theory tests, tutorials, assignments, group projects and peer assessment.

    Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:
  • Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a practical and written examination.

    Pass requirements that will be implemented:
  • To gain access to summative assessment learners have to acquire a minimum of 50% in the formative assessment.
  • To pass the modules learners have to gain a minimum of 50% as a combination of the formative and summative assessment.

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Access to qualifications on a lower level:
  • Some of the modules might later be electives in the fourth year of the B Optom course.

    Access to qualifications on the same level:
  • Learners would preferably have completed all the modules in the graduate Optometry programme.

    Access to qualifications on a higher level:
  • Having obtained this qualification, the following possibilities for further study of higher education programme exist: A master's degree (level 8) program at any higher education institution.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Modules and assessment procedures will be moderated by subject specialists in the field. External specialist in the field of sport will continuously moderate outcomes, assessment criteria and do quality assurance of the qualification. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors of this qualification should at least have a D Phil or PhD degree and recent peer-reviewed publications to their credit. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
