PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification includes the various specialisations in Nursing. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

a) To introduce the post-graduate student to advanced study in an area of specialisation in the field of Nursing Science, and in so doing to consolidate and deepen what has been learned in the first degree.

b) Equip qualifying learners with the necessary professional skills, knowledge and attitudes to function efficiently and effectively within their chosen area of specialisation

c) Establish a proper base for undertaking independent research in their chosen area of specialisation, through the acquisition of the necessary research skills and tools, and to provide a foundation for further learning in respect of Master's and Doctoral degrees

d) Stimulate an interest in academic study in the field of Nursing Science and to ensure a constant supply of well-equipped nursing professional for both the private and public sectors who are both critical thinkers and socially aware


The qualification provides benefits for the South African community and economy by:

e) Providing the community with a specialist health care worker

f) Correcting past inequalities, in that persons of all population and ethnic groups are eligible to obtain this qualification, and in so doing, transforming the profile of South African post-graduate nurses.

The qualification strives to fulfil the objectives o the National Qualification Framework by:


g) Playing an active role, and forming an integral part of the national framework for learning by facilitating admission, mobility and progression within tertiary education and occupational opportunities.

h) Promoting quality of education and contributing to the comprehensive personal development of each qualifying learner and social and economic development of the community

i) Providing the community with nursing specialist professionals who are equipped to develop new, and transform existing, nursing services and programmes that address the specific needs of the South African community

j) Fulfilling the objectives of the National Qualification Framework by laying the foundation for further post-graduate studies and ongoing professional development. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BCur degree or any other suitable nursing degree as approved by the Senate of the university of Stellenbosch for this purpose.

Other qualification:

Applicants must have a Baccalareus degree which is approved by the Senate for this purpose.

Additional requirements:

Applicants must be in possession of a certificate of registration as General Nurse at the South African Nursing Council and the basic nursing qualification which corresponds with their chosen area of specialisation.

Within their chosen area of specialisation, the qualifying learner will:

1. Effectively apply health sciences and technology and demonstrate confident, systematic and deep knowledge within the field of Nursing Science.

2. Demonstrate a deep knowledge of health service delivery with all its complexities within an appropriate model

3. Demonstrate as an advanced nurse practitioner, responsible participation in the promotion of the quality of life of the local community, the South African population and the global community.

4. Demonstrate deep understanding of cultural, religious and ethnic diversities and their influences on the health care consumers perception of health and illness.

5. Identify, and find solutions to health related problems through basic research and the use of critical and creative thinking.

6. Demonstrate leadership within the health care team and groups in the community

7. Demonstrate the capacity for responsible and effective organisation, management and delivery of nursing services.

8. Communicate effectively with health service consumers and professional colleagues using visual, verbal, non-verbal and written skills.

9. Reflection on and exploration of a variety of research strategies to promote scientific investigation.

The HonsBCur graduate will be able to:

1. Collect, analyse, reformat, organise and critically appraise a wide range of information.

2. Conduct basic research using appropriate methods, and justify and explain conclusions within the epistemology of the area of specialisation in Nursing Science

3. Take initiative and argue effectively and convincingly in intellectual debate

4. Identify and solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts

5. Effectively select and apply theoretical knowledge to their professional practice and vice versa.

6. Communicate research findings effectively to colleagues in order to improve service programmes

7. Make sound theoretical judgements and evaluations in order to identify contradictions, challenge orthodox theory and practices, and suggest new methodologies.


The HonsBCur graduate will demonstrate:

1. Mastery of deep theoretical subject matter and an appropriate level of clinical competencies within the chosen area of specialisation in the field of Nursing Science.

2. Capacity for independent study and research through the completion of papers, assignments and projects which show potential for future publication.

3. Understanding and application of appropriate academic and professional values and ethics

4. Reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to promote effective learning and promote academic self-reflection and adaptability 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
2).

1. The assessments used for the qualification of HonsBCur ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

2. The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7.

3. A range of formative and summative assessment methods are used, such as assignments, projects, presentations, case studies, clinical assessments, a research project and written examinations.

4. The qualifying learner's written and oral presentations must be of an acceptable academic standard in terms of the use of Afrikaans or English as language and the structural organisation of presentations.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

The qualifying learners must:
  • Achieve a minimum of 50% in both the theoretical and clinical components and must satisfactorily complete all compulsory assignments.
  • Submit a report of the research project which meets the standards and requirements of a research assignment at Honours level
  • Demonstrate proof of successful integration of all theoretical and clinical components. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation into Master's programmes at the Department of Nursing of the university of Stellenbosch or any other appropriate department at a university in South Africa is ensured.

    Horizontal articulation is possible with other programmes in Nursing e.g. Diploma in Nursing (Education, Administration, Critical Care, Post-basic Psychiatric Nursing, Community Nursing, Midwifery, etc)

    Vertical articulation with Master's programmes unrelated to nursing is also enhanced e.g. Master's in Rehabilitation, etc.

    Horizontal articulation is enhanced with access to a variety of other related generic courses such as Public Health and Business Administration and Honours in Psychology. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

    In addition to one or more internal examiners (who are usually staff members of the university of Stellenbosch), standard university regulations require that one or more external examiner(s) of national scholarly repute in the field of Nursing Science, have to assess the qualifying learners final level and standard of competency.

    Accreditation by the Professional Board (South African Nursing Council) 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner in accordance with the quality assurance system of the university.


    In addition to one or more internal examiners (who are usually staff members of the university of Stellenbosch), standard university regulations require that one or more external examiner(s) of national scholarly repute have to assess the qualifying learner's final level and standard of competency.
