The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to acquire the necessary competencies in order to perform much needed services while providing benefits for social and economic development. Completing this qualification will enable learners to apply practical competences in the industry.

Citizen development in training our learners for viable careers, leading to:
  • Economic independence.
  • Responsible lifestyle.
  • Enhancement of lifestyle on as many levels of society as possible.
  • Sustainable development.

    Personal development by profiting from the stimulating, nurturing and formative learning environment created here for the realisation, fulfilment and continuous growth of their potential, into persons with:

    Rationale:
    The qualification is economically viable as it can be completed in a year and contains all the necessary practical and theoretical skills needed to be successful in the industry.

    The main market for this qualification is school leavers, but because it is a one year certificate, this qualification is also ideal for people wanting to enter a new profession. It is useful in conjunction with other qualifications such as hairdressing, photography, advertising and media.

    Learners that are disadvantaged in the sense that they have a limited time in which to complete a formal qualification will benefit from the qualification and in doing so be a benefit to society and the economy as a whole. The qualification will also enable learners to continue with relevant learning at higher levels providing articulation possibilities.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Leaning (RPL):
    The Institution strives to comply with the National Policy for the Implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning. RPL may be carried out at any level of learning and at any NQF level and to provide an alternative access route into a programme of learning for those who do not meet the formal entry requirements for admission. RPL assessment constitutes of two parts, namely the Cognitive Assessment and Supporting Documentation that provides an insight into required competencies needed.

    Entry Requirements:
    Learners must have either of the following to gain entry in this qualification:
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC), granting access to Higher Certificate.
  • A Senior Certificate, granting access to Higher Certificate.
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 4, granting access to Higher Certificate.

    This qualification consists of 10 compulsory modules at NQF Level 5 and 6 totalling 145 Credits.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Knowledge and informed understanding of terminology, anatomical positions, structural organisation and function of anatomy and physiology relevant to the field of Somatology, to aid in the development of underpinning knowledge for practical application.
    2. Select, plan and compose applied theoretical knowledge and practical competencies within the field of Somatology in order to perform a facial treatment to enhance client's appearance.
    3. Select, plan and perform basic theoretical knowledge and practical body techniques within the field of Somatology, in order to perform a treatment on the body.
    4. Ability to communicate verbally or in writing, via different technologies and media, in an accurate, professional and coherent manner with understanding of copyright and rules on plagiarism.
    5. Basic fundamental computer skills, analysis and summary of key aspects regarding usage and concepts to be used in study and business.
    6. Demonstrate and apply fundamental entrepreneurship concepts and legal skills to establish and operate a successful business in accordance with acceptable ethical and professional behaviour relevant to the practice of Somatology.
    7. Distinguish, evaluate and solve routine problems using exercise science in familiar contexts and to apply the solutions to support progress in the practice of Postural and Figure analysis in Somatology.
    8. Demonstrate the following: A knowledge and informed understanding to guide the client to a healthier lifestyle utilising nutritional knowledge and recommendations.
    9. Demonstrate knowledge and informed understanding of the principles and processes underlying chemistry and physics in the field of Somatology.
    10. Monitor own learning progress, implement relevant learning strategies in work integrated learning to improve learning, and manage resources in the workplace effectively to successfully realise the task outcome of all practical components completed throughout the Somatology qualification.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Cellular function and tissue organisation of the human body is described and explained.
  • The structure, formation and maintenance of skeleton are described and explained with references to movement and protection of the human body.
  • The structure, placement and function of the different muscles of the muscular system are classified and discussed in relation to movement and protection of the human body.
  • The structures of the integumentary system are recognised and elaborated on.
  • The pH of the skin, the acid mantle, keratinisation and the ageing process are explained.
  • The knowledge and understanding of Dermatology and skin disorders as a point of reference to diagnose and provide advice for safe effective treatments.
  • The location, structure, function and component parts of the sensory system are assessed as part of the communication system.
  • The accessory eye structures and the layers of the wall of the eye are identified, and the major functions of each, the pathway of the imbalances that may occur in the function of each structure are indicated.
  • The structures of the external, middle, and internal ear are indicated noting the function of each.
  • The location, structure, and function of the olfactory and taste receptors are described.
  • The location, structure and function of digestive system are examined in relation with basic nutritional requirements, the digestion of nutrients and excretion of waste.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Basic logistical arrangements regarding workstation are adhered to.
  • Products and material is used economically to prevent wastage of product.
  • Hygienic rules and sterilisation procedures are adhered to.
  • Contra-indications to treatment are identified and treated according to severity.
  • Implementation and preparations are correctly handled during treatment.
  • The client is received and consulted in a professional manner.
  • The skin is prepared for skin analysis and analysed.
  • The skin type and condition is recognised and explained to the client and causative factors of each.
  • Skin conditions, structural changes within the tissues and causes should be identified and described.
  • Treatments should be formulated, manage and performed within the capacity as a Health and Skincare Therapist obtained from integrated knowledge.
  • A facial treatment is performed.
  • Appropriate home care advice is given according to the clients' needs.
  • Professionalism is maintained throughout the treatment.
  • Manual extractions are performed as per pre-set criteria.
  • A safe massage of the face, neck and dcollet is administered.
  • The tinting mixture is applied, monitored, timed and removed according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Aftercare is followed for tinting and tweezing.
  • The eyebrow grooming technique is performed.
  • The structure of the skin is identified, listed and described.
  • Products and preparations are correctly handled during treatment.
  • The correct practical make-up procedure is followed and executed in 30 minutes.
  • Various facial shapes characteristics are identified and corrective techniques are performed.
  • Corrective make-up techniques for various features are performed including, be it highlighting, shading, contouring or concealing.
  • Colour and make-up products are used to perform and manage make-overs considering all factors concerning the client, function and cost.
  • Eyelash implants/lash extensions are inserted in accordance with prescribed rooting.

  • The various structures of the nail are identified, distinguishing between their underpinning analysis and pathological functions.
  • The process of nail growth and the factors that may influence it in order to give advice is explained.
  • The functions, ingredients and safety considerations of nail preparations are identified and applied practically.
  • Perform the temporary removal of unwanted facial and body hair by means of application of wax.
  • Client discomfort is minimised throughout the treatment and modesty is maintained.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of the use of various temporary forms of hair removal is understood and explained.
  • The theory of the hair is understood, and explained with reference to their position and function.
  • The hair growth cycle is explained and the factors that affect hair growth are understood.
  • Basic body analysis is performed and educated advice is given to client based on findings thereof.
  • Findings of body analysis are analysed and recommendations are made on the client card.
  • Treatment schedule is established according to analysis.
  • History and definition of massage throughout the ages are explained.
  • Classical massage movements are demonstrated and explained.

  • Internet services and software are identified and used for their specified purposes.

  • Exercises for remediation of postural deviations are performed.
  • Areas of the body that must be evaluated during postural assessment are evaluated.
  • Correct use of plumb line in the assessment of posture is utilised.
  • Fat percentage of the body is calculated using correct formulations.
  • Landmarks are identified and correctly measured using skin fold technique.
  • Client is grouped according to soma type, using formulas and body fold readings.

  • Macro and micronutrients, anti-nutrients, and the role they play in the internal metabolism, are identified.
  • RDA of vitamins and mineral functions and deficiencies as well as super-anti-oxidants is discussed.

  • The fat and water-soluble vitamins, functions and deficiencies, micro- and macro minerals with their functions and deficiency symptoms are explained.
  • Water, its composition and functions is elaborated on.
  • An eating plan pyramid is drawn up.
  • Malnutrition is discussed.
  • Metabolic process, energy balance in relation to regulation of food intake is distinguished between.
  • The disadvantages and advantages of diets are outlined.
  • Client is guided to healthier lifestyle.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 9:
  • Basic concepts regarding Organic Chemistry are explained and applied practically using industry related examples.
  • Role of organic chemistry compounds in the cosmetic industry.
  • The history of cosmetics and current developments are described and elaborated on.
  • Definition of cosmetic preparations is given.
  • Main active ingredients, properties, effects, and shelf life are described.
  • Detailed knowledge of common cosmetic chemical ingredients is demonstrated.
  • The properties of cosmetics, functions, and active ingredients are classified and explained.
  • The use, theory and active ingredients regarding perfume found in cosmetics are discussed with reference to the cosmetic industry.

  • Integration of theory and practice through the incorporation of work-integrated learning is applied.

    Integrated Assessment:
    All assessments must be fair, valid and reliable. An integrated assessment approach is incorporated through formative and summative assessment processes.

    A variety of assessment strategies and/or approaches must be used such as, but not limited to:

  • Assignments.
  • Workbooks.
  • Projects.
  • Demonstrations.

    Practical Assessment may take the form of:
