The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To enhance the capacity regarding nutrition of people working in the health and social services to promote health and prevent malnutrition and disease.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
  • Prior learning may be recognised for access.

    Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition, Level 8.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Community Nutrition or Public Health, Level 8.
  • Honours Degree or equivalent in Dietetics or Nutrition, Level 8.
  • Any other qualifications approved by the Senate of the University of the Western Cape.

    1. Comprehensive understanding of principles and concepts of nutrition science: human nutrition, scientific basis of nutritional requirements and how these vary with physiological and socio-cultural factors.
    2. Comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence the food system, dietary patterns and behaviour.
    3. A comprehensive understanding of methodologies used in nutrition assessment (assessment of nutritional status) with specific emphasis on applications at population level (in community settings).
    4. Demonstrable capacity for project and programme management in the context of health programming, competently managing all aspects of health-related inter-sectoral programmes and projects.
    5. A demonstrable ability to participate in the design of appropriate and relevant integrated nutrition strategies and formulation of a food and nutrition policy, at various levels, within a national development strategy.
    6. A demonstrable ability to communicate, mediate, negotiate and advocate for nutrition.
    7. A demonstrable ability to design food and nutrition studies, data collection, handling, analysis and interpretations and research report writing.
    8. A demonstrable capacity to analyse the underlying social, economic and political conditions related to nutrition and food security and an understanding of current concepts and practices in improving food and nutrition conditions in the context of human development.
    9. Demonstrated leadership, dedication, commitment, motivation and sensitivity for working in cross-cultural settings. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Masters students will be able to do the above and in addition be able to undertake complex research by conceptualising, planning, implementing, analysing data and reporting research projects.

  • Integrated Assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

    Continuous Assessment:
  • Module tasks, assignments, mentoring and case studies.

    Summative Assessment:
  • Assignment, examinations-written and/or oral after completion of modules.
  • Submission of a thesis for the Master Degree.
