The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • To equip students for ministry according to different denominational needs.
  • To equip students to apply theory to congregational ministry.
  • The integration of theory and practice within the context of a congregational setting.
  • The formation of ministers, caregivers, Christian leaders and lay workers for ministry and service within the community.
  • The training of ministers, caregivers, Christian leaders and lay workers under supervision within a congregational setting.
  • The enhancement of competence in terms of ministerial needs and practical theological issues.
  • Scientific research within the congregational ministry. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

  • Any Bachelor's Degree, Level 7.

    4. Demonstrate the dynamics of ministry and explain its link to other disciplines and to community issues.
    5. Apply theology to ministerial issues and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the working and functioning of a local faith community as a caring, sharing and witnessing community.
    6. Carry out conversational and counselling skills for ministry in specific fields (marriages, family life, people suffering).
    7. Address community issues such as injustice and poverty.
    8. Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics and functioning of local faith communities. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Associated Assessment Criteria are assessed in an integrated manner across all the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Operate as a Christian leader, minister, caregiver or lay worker within the setting of a local faith community.
  • Preach and conduct a sermon.
  • Minister to a local congregation and lead a church council.
  • Care for people (marriages, families, youth, people in suffering and distress).
  • Administer the sacraments.
  • Apply principles of cross-cultural communication in ministry and mission within multi-cultural settings.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Christian spirituality.
  • Adhere to professional integrity and ethics as determined by Christian theology.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Complete a research project in order to apply Christian theology to the practice of ministry. Research must be done in close corporation with disciplines from the human sciences.
  • Group discussion and peer evaluation.
  • Evaluation under supervision.
  • The writing of counselling reports and verbalism.
