The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Produce graduates for the industry in the field of Tourism and related fields.
Produce graduates for self-employment, consultancy and small business leadership in tourism and recreation related fields. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Entry Requirements:
Bachelor Honours Degree in Social and or Natural Sciences.
Or
Any other relevant Degree, with at least three years working experience in the field of tourism and recreation.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
This qualification allows for both course work and full dissertation with compulsory modules at 180 Credits:

Full Dissertation, 180 Credits.
Or
Coursework, 180 Credits.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • Identify a research problem within a specific discipline of movement and sport science and read widely to enhance their knowledge in this area.
  • Write research proposal(s) that indicate that learners are able to identify a problem(s) in tourism and related fields and formulate the research problem(s).
  • Formulate hypotheses, select and utilise appropriate research instruments and data analysis methods, collect and report the findings of the investigation and formulate recommendations.
  • Search, critically read and interpret literature form different sources and draw comparisons and conclusions.
  • Create a theoretical framework provided by the literature review and compile a bibliography.
  • Identify and analyse different scientific procedures in terms of the problem being researched.
  • Express him herself clearly in written form that is linguistically correct and well presented.

    Integrated Assessment:
    1. Reports on internship programmes.
    2. Research reports.
    3. Written assignments.
    4. End of module examination and tests. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows for vertical and horizontal articulation options:

    Recreation and/or tourism professional.
    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Recreation and Tourism, NQF Level 10.

    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Master of Arts in Social Science, NQF 9. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External examiners from Recreation and Tourism experts. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal: Minimum MBA/MA/MSc Degree qualification in Recreation and Tourism or equivalent.

    External: Minimum MBA/MA/MSc Degree qualification in recreation and Tourism or equivalent and at least 5 years' experience in tourism and recreation management.
