Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
  • To contribute and research into an emerging national framework within the land and agrarian reform sector.
  • To meet the demand in the land and agrarian reform sectors in both South Africa and in the Southern African region for post-graduate training in sector-specific conceptual and policy analysis skills, and to service a range of career options within these sectors (e.g. planners, policy makers, fieldworkers).

    Rationale:

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learner must have a basic understanding of the sustainable livelihoods approach to integrated development, the role of agriculture in economic development, the main features of South Africa's agrarian structure, approaches and methods used in rural enterprise planning, and of the legal framework within which reform takes place. The learner student must be able to communicate effectively with peers and the wider community, through writing and oral presentations.

    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
    In the Recognition of Prior Learning process students have to undergo a Portfolio Development Course to support the student's admission. The Professional Development Center (PDC) will focus on written submission explaining the reasons for the candidates' interest in Land and Agrarian Studies as an adjunct to their existing professional competencies and indicating the nature of a possible research project.

    Entry Requirements:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Land and Agrarian Studies, Level 8.
  • An Honours Degree, Level 8 or a Bachelor's Degree Level 8 in a relevant discipline (e.g. Sociology, History, Economics, Political Science, Geographical and Environmental studies).

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    Learning components:
  • Advanced Research project in Land and Agrarian Studies, 160 Credits.
  • Analytical and Research Methods, 20 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
  • Conduct independent research on aspects of land and agrarian reform, either of a theoretical or an applied nature.
  • Compile a thesis on research findings. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1. A research project is designed.
    2. The research carried out using recognised research methods from a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, legal studies, or environmental science).
    3. Research findings are reported in accepted academic formats.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Internal Supervision and guidance in terms of the research project.
  • Assessment may consist of any of the research report (thesis).
