The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualifying learner will be competent in Studio Practice Skills and Ceramic Technology, thus enabling him/her to design and manufacture of Ceramic Products as a Ceramic Artist, Ceramic Craftsperson and/or Ceramic Design (Designer-Maker). 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Access may be granted, through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), to learners who do not meet the minimum entry requirements.

Entry Requirements:
  • National Senior Certificate, Level 4 granting access to Diploma studies.
  • Senior Certificate, Level 4 with Matriculation exemption.
  • National Certificate Vocation, Level 4 with a relevant specialisation, granting access to Diploma studies.
  • Higher Certificate in Ceramic Design, Level 5.

    1. Demonstrate basic Ceramic Product Design and Manufacture skills and knowledge. (Either as Artist, Designer Maker and Crafts Person.
    2. Design and manufacture ceramics to specified hypothetical projects based on the latest market trends and consumer needs.
    3. Demonstrate an applied knowledge of History of Art, Design and Architecture with the emphasis on the History of Ceramics and Ceramic Technology (Basic Ceramic Science).
    4. Drawings skills are developed to realise ideas in terms of ceramic techniques and processes. Preparatory Drawings serve as initial entry into the manufacturing process for group discussions/input. Most importantly they serve as working drawings for the chosen manufacturing processes.
    5. Demonstrate an understanding of Business Factors relevant to Ceramic Design and Manufacture. Art, Craft and Designer-maker products).

    2. Have a working knowledge of Ceramic History and Ceramic Technology (Basic Ceramic Science).
    3. Understanding of the function of the drawing in realising ideas in terms of ceramic techniques and processes.
    4. Working knowledge of business concepts and practise specific to a Ceramic Artist, Crafts-person and Design-maker.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Be able to produce a body of work demonstrating competence in Studio Practice Skills and Ceramic Technology. The Design and Manufacture of a range of Ceramic products as produced by a Ceramic Artist, Craft-person and/or Design-maker.
