| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
Upon qualifying the learner will be able to: Rationale: The Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics has been developed to address the need for somatology specialisation within the aesthetic medicine field. Aesthetic Medicine is one of the fastest growing fields in healthcare today. The demand for non-surgical facial rejuvenation therapy is growing and the partnership between doctors, nurses and somatologists is the ideal model to provide safe, state of the art care for patients. Recent industry feedback and discussions with various stakeholders in the industry has shown that there is a great demand for specialised training for somatologists and nurses in the aesthetic field. Certain procedures such as chemical peelings, microdermabrasion, Intense Pulsed Light, Laser and Pre-and Post-operative care require more advanced and detailed knowledge. Medical professionals (dermatologists, general practitioners and plastic surgeons) are using Somatologists/nurses to assist with these basic aesthetic procedures. The Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics will equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required by the industry to safely and effectively assist practitioners in performing these treatments. This qualification will provide learners with job opportunities in Spas, Aesthetic salons. With the implementation of the new NQF and the phasing out of the Bachelor of Technology in Somatology qualification, there are currently no articulation possibilities for qualified Somatologists wishing to further their education and especially those wanting to go into Somatology education. The Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics (NQF Level 7) will offer articulation options for Somatologists who wish to further their career in somatology. The envisaged target group comprises Somatologists and healthcare professionals (i.e. nurses) who are employed full-or part-time and wishing to specialise in the field of aesthetics. The qualification will be offered in distance learning mode. Although there are various short courses and in-house workshops (facilitated by product house companies, providing brand specific training) available for somatologists and health care practitioners (nurses) wishing to work in the aesthetic field, at present, there is no formally accredited programme available that addresses the need for intellectual enrichment by means of an intensive, focused and applied specialisation as required by various stakeholders in the industry. The need thus exists for a formalised qualification. Career opportunities are limitless. With the revolutionary advances in non-surgical facial rejuvenation and our ageing population the field of aesthetics will continue to grow at an exciting pace. Learners with an Advanced Diploma in Advanced Aesthetics will be able to work in physicians' offices and other healthcare facilities. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists commonly employ Somatologists to perform procedures including chemical peels, exfoliations and photo lights facials under their supervision. Over the past few years, the aesthetic and wellness industry has seen, and continues to see, a tremendous amount of growth. This exponential growth has resulted in a very high demand for specialisation in the field of aesthetics. |
