    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of juice sedimentation.
    OUTCOME NOTES
  • Explaining the basic principles of juice sedimentation
  • Identifying and explaining the purpose of the various equipment associated with juice clarification

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:

    Understanding of:
  • Basic principles of flocculation and juice sedimentation

    Reasons for:
  • Monitoring process variables (including but not limited to pH, purity and brix) and taking corrective actions
  • Starting up the clarifiers and coordinating with ancillary equipment according to standard operating procedures
  • Shutting down the clarifiers according to standard operating procedures
  • Informing relevant parties of clarification performance during the shift

    Consequences of not
  • Adhering to safety procedures
  • Measuring clear juice clarity and adjusting mixed juice temperature and flow as well as flocculant addition accordingly
  • Maintaining mud consistency and withdrawal according to process requirements

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare for juice sedimentation.
    OUTCOME NOTES
  • Starting-up the clarifier(s) and ancillary equipment according to standard operating procedures
