PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The unit standard is aimed at individuals who are required to set up and operate a camping site in the outdoors in an environmentally safe manner.

The setting up of a camping site is specifically associated with a wide range of adventure and recreation intervention requirements and activities and should not be confused with the preparation for camping within the confines of a professionally run holiday camping environment.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Select a suitable camping site within the area of operation.
  • Conclude logistical arrangements according to identified intervention requirements.
  • Conduct a camping intervention.
  • Conclude a camping intervention.

    Environmental impact is evaluated so as to minimise impact on the natural environment.

    Suitability of terrain is evaluated in terms of potential risks and hazards that can impact on the participants.

    Prevailing weather and conditions are identified and used to determine whether special safety precautions need to be taken.

    Logistical requirements are identified and the necessary actions taken to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and safety of participants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements include but are not limited to:
  • Transportation, obtaining of permits and agreements, shelter, camping equipment, provision for food and food preparation, human waste removal, rubbish removal, group size, type and duration of intervention planned.

    Logistical arrangements are concluded as per determined requirements and needs.

    A camping site is set up so as to meet intervention needs and safety requirements.

    Camping equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines.

    Provisions are stored and food prepared to ensure food safety and hygiene. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Provisions includes but is not limited to:
  • Water and water treatments ensuring suitability for human consumption, beverages, dry, wet, fresh or preserved food items across the full spectrum of the main food groups including protein, carbohydrates, fruit, vegetables and fats.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Acceptable campsite behaviour is discussed and agreed with the group participating in the intervention.

    Camping activities are managed so as to ensure minimum impact on the environment.

  • Campfire safety and use of fire within land management guidelines, agreed upon environmentally friendly rubbish and human waste disposal or removal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Participants are briefed on requirements for camp site evacuation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The camping site is dissembled so as to minimise negative impact on the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dissembling includes but is not limited to:
  • The safe dismantling of equipment, clearing and cleaning of equipment such as food utensils, packing and storing of equipment, removal and/or disposal of rubbish and all human waste, removal of personal belongings including shelters, disposal and/or removal of food items or provisions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Campfires are extinguished in a safe and responsible manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Logistical arrangements associated with departure of participants are concluded according to operational requirements.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
