PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals who will lead participants or clients through outdoor recreation and adventure activities. The learner needs to show competence in the technical skills of the activities to be followed. The learner will be able to assist and provide support in the avoiding of potential hazardous situations.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate relevant technical skills appropriate to a selected activity.
  • Lead participants through a selected Adventure Based activity.
  • Apply safety practices to ensure participant's physical well-being.

  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Technical skills in a selected adventure activity are demonstrated at a level meeting industry standards and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Control of the environment, tools and equipment associated with the selected activity is manoeuvred confidently so as to support technical ability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment associated with the selected activity is used correctly so as to maintain safety and security requirements and standards.

    Individual's exposure to and experience in a selected adventure activity are assessed so as to establish levels of confidence and experience.

    Novices and inexperienced participants are briefed on activity requirements so as to ensure participation in the activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Elementary techniques relevant to the experience level of the participants are demonstrated so as to familiarise first time participants with requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Knowledge and techniques for adventure activities are shared so as to encourage meaningful participation of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Activities are adapted according to the needs and limitations of the participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Support is provided to participants according to their identified needs and confidence levels so as to enable them to complete a selected activity.

    Apply safety practices to ensure participant's physical well-being.

    The correct use of tools and equipment is demonstrated to participants in support of safe practices.

    Participants are briefed on safety measures and precautions and their understanding of requirements are checked and confirmed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential hazards and basic safety precautions are identified and correct actions demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rescue techniques and procedures are explained and demonstrated to participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety is maintained throughout the duration of the activity in support of the physical well-being of participants. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
