PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to list and explain different types of emergencies that could occur at sea and describe the resources, equipment and methods that would be followed when abandoning a ship. They are also able to explain how to survive at sea, construct a liferaft, launch and board a survival craft and recover a survival craft. The person will also be able to management survivors and the craft until safety is obtained.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Perform activities related to the launching and boarding of a survival craft. |

Various types of survival craft are listed and their purpose and use explained with an example of each type. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
The types of survival craft may include but are not limited to survival craft, rescue boat, freefall survival craft and rescue craft. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Pre launching and boarding procedures and standards are described in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Survival craft launching activities are conducted in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Survival craft launching may include but is not limited to being able to use; Single arm davits, Marine slide raft escape systems, Manual launching, Hydrostatic release. |

Survival craft boarding activities are performed in accordance with manufacturer and organisational procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Survival craft boarding activities may include but is not limited to being able to donning a life jacket, knowledge of donning and using an immersion suit, safety jump from a height into the water (+/- 3 metre), use of boarding ladders, right an inverted liferaft, perform basic "paddling"/swimming techniques while wearing a lifejacket, perform basic floating techniques without a lifejacket, board a survival craft from ship and from the water while wearing a lifejacket, avoiding danger to others when boarding the survival craft. |

Information required to prepare for emergency may include but is not limited to location of life-buoys and their accessories, training and drills held onboard, the statutory requirements and the practical aims and drills, the correct clothing to wear for drills and emergency situations, extra articles of clothing to take in case of abandoning ship. |

The engine is operated in accordance with manufacturers specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Operation of engine includes but is not limited to manual decompression lever type, ratchet decompression lever, electric start, stored energy hydraulic, stored energy spring, inertia starters, throttle and gears, a controllable pitch propeller. |

Fault finding is conducted in the event of engine not starting according to manufacturer's specifications. |

The craft is controlled in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and safety procedures in different weather conditions. |
