PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The unit is specifically designed to standardise the achievement, which can lead to the designation: Senior Site Guide. When expert knowledge of more than one site has been achieved, an Advanced Site Guide designation may be awarded. The learner who achieves the credits for this unit standard will be able to research and plan a guided nature, cultural or adventure experience in an appropriate site in South Africa as is applicable to a selected Province in which guiding services are provided.

The training of site guides at this level will provide for well-informed persons who are able to interpret or utilise the relevant site at a high level. This higher level of knowledge and experience should substantially benefit the sub-fields.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Conduct a research tour in preparation of a guided experience in a designated tourism site.
  • Develop an inventory for a selected site in support of the design of a guided experience.
  • Design a guided nature, culture or adventure experience for a designated tourism site.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Conduct a research tour in preparation of a guided experience in a designated tourism site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    General background information of a specific site is collected, assessed and evaluated so as to prepare for a guided experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A route plan of the research tour is drawn up with due consideration for the size and complexity of the site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report is compiled which contains detailed site information gathered during the research tour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A record is kept of site-specific equipment requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    As applicable; Wet weather gear, protection against dangerous animals, scuba gear for deep underwater exploration, abseiling equipment, night illumination, Potential risks are identified, recorded and communicated effectively.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Respectful and acceptable conduct is defined and clearly outlined as it applies to the selected site. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Acceptable conduct includes cultural sensitivity, places of worship, cemeteries, Indigenous culture, home interiors.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Develop an inventory for a selected site in support of the design of a guided experience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Site specific data relating to the major features of the site is recorded in support of the design of a guided experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific data includes but is not limited to:
  • A map configuration reflecting topography, relief, major natural features, biomes, cultural features, dominant natural vegetation, climate conditions and other scenic attractions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic information relating to the surrounding area is incorporated as part of an inventory. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Surrounding area information includes but is not limited to:
  • Nearby cities, towns and major transport routes, alternative routes, hospitality, accommodation, communication network, medical facilities and other tourism resources within the area.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Design a guided nature, culture or adventure experience for a designated tourism site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A site inventory is used to plan a guided experience utilising the prominent resources and attractions applicable to a designated tourism site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An itinerary is planned and designed in support of a guided experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Itinerary includes but is not limited to:
  • Major attractions, features, natural phenomena, highlights of the guided experience and any other required information which will be affected by the duration of the experience, including accommodation and meals requirements.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Marketing material is compiled so as to support the planned itinerary and guided experience. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
