PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Backfill and compact irrigation trenches.
  • Relay the grass sods.
  • Replace the plant material and care for the lawn and plants.

    Demonstrate knowledge of numeracy and communication at NQF level 1.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Backfill trenches after the irrigation equipment has been installed. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: backfilling, selected fill, sand, topsoil, subsoil, pipe damage, stones, sieve. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of using a stone free soil to cover the piping is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methods of 'cleaning' the soil to be used in backfilling are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The conditions that necessitate the importing of backfill material are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The sequence of backfilling the various soil types is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of conserving topsoil is explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the compaction of backfill in the trenches. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: lawn areas, flower beds, paths / paved areas, soil stabilizing, subsidence, backfill layers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for backfilling and compacting the soil in layers are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The degree of compaction for the trenches in lawn areas is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The degree of compaction for the trenches in flower beds is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The degree of compaction for the trenches in paths / paved areas is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The conditions that necessitate soil stabilizing are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The methods to achieve soil stabilization are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of not obtaining the correct degree of compaction are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate a knowledge of the replacement of sods in the trenches. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: level, gaps, original position, compaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of replacing sods in their original positions is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The initial level of the sods, when placed in the trenches, is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The compaction and leveling of the sods is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate a knowledge of the replacement of plants in the trenches. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: soil preparation / enrichment, compost, peatmoss, root loss, plant position, aspect, soil & stem level, soil firming. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for enriching the soil for the replanting of mature shrubs, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparation / enrichment of the soil is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of replacing plants in their original position and aspect is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of replacing the soil above the original stem level are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of replacing the soil below the original stem level are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The firming of the soil around a replanted shrub is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate a knowledge of the procedures for the 'clean-up' and care of the replanted lawn and plants. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: sweep lawn, pick up stones, apply water to plants, wash lawn. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedures for the cleaning of the lawn and flower beds are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The application of water to the plants is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The 'washing' of the lawn in the trenched areas is demonstrated. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

    The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation only.

    The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.

    Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

    Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

    Embedded knowledge is reflected within the assessment criteria of each specific outcome and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation cannot be the only assessment.

    Assessors must:
  • Be accredited as an assessor by the relevant ETQA.
  • Hold an assessor certificate according to the current requirements.
  • Have experience or in depth knowledge of the horticultural industry, specifically as it relates to ornamental aspects. 

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    The Learner
  • Is expected to perform the specific outcomes reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision.
  • Should have access to work site procedures.
  • Should demonstrate an application of ethics and values.
  • Must apply basic principles of general safety and customer care.
  • Should demonstrate an awareness of the expectations and obligations of basic employee/employer relations including industrial relations principles.

    At this level the communication / reporting of issues arising in the workplace, is embedded in the specific outcomes and the related assessment criteria.

    It is understood that, due to the nature of the work environment and the skills level of the Learner, that the aspects of teamwork form an integral part of the necessary specific outcomes and related assessment criteria.
