PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
All qualifications for Education, Training and Development (ETD) practitioners are required by law to include unit standards that enable ETD practitioners to accommodate learners with special needs.
This unit standard is relevant to assistant or junior environmental education practitioners. It ensures that they will be aware of, sensitive to and able to support learners with special needs in a learning situation.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe a range of special needs that may be encountered during an environmental learning programme or action project
  • Recognise and assist learners who have special needs during an environmental learning programme or action project 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learner should demonstrate GETC or equivalent. This unit standard does not assume prior environmental education training or experience. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is applicable assistant or junior environmental education practitioners working under supervision or assisting more experienced practitioners to implement environmental learning programmes or action projects. At this stage the candidate should be able to recognise and assist a learner with special needs.

    A separate unit standard has been developed to enable more senior environmental education practitioners to design programmes to accommodate learners with special needs (Unit standard EE 5D.07 Develop learning programmes to enhance participation of learners with special needs).

    Environmental education practitioners should be aware of learners with special physical, health, cognitive, emotional and economic needs.

    1. List a range of special needs.

    2. Describe how to recognise learners with particular special needs by explaining typical symptoms or signs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cover about five scenarios, including an example of a learner with a physical disability, a health condition and a learning disability, a learner who has suffered emotional abuse, and a learner from an economically deprived background (e.g. showing signs of malnutrition).

    3. Describe in general terms how to respond appropriately and sensitively to learners with special needs.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation and moderation options:

    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Refer to Specific Outcomes and to the Assessment Criteria contained in this unit standard.

    To achieve this unit standard the learner will require basic knowledge of the symptoms of a range of special needs, and appropriate ways of responding to and supporting learners with a range of special needs.

    They will also need to understand the goals, principles and methods of environmental education.
