PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for people who operate in the hunting sector and is required to interpret and understand wildlife behaviour within the context and for the purpose of hunting.

Learners achieving this unit standard will be able to apply the interpretation of wildlife behaviour within the context of hunting and will be able to:
  • Identify huntable indigenous fauna.
  • Respond appropriately when interacting with huntable wild animals.
  • Explain the ways in which wild animals put indigenous flora to use.
  • Collect and record data on populations and movements of huntable wild animals.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further required that the learner has been active as an amateur hunter for a period of two years.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Identify huntable indigenous fauna.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The most important distinguishing characteristics of plains game are identified by visual assessment in the field.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
External anatomical features of larger and smaller species; age and sex determination; preferred habitat, food preference; degree of water dependence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A detailed outline is provided of ways to identify game bird species present in a conservation area.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
External physical appearance; bird calls; age and sex determination; preferred habitat, food preference; degree of water dependence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The notion of "huntability" is defined with reference to the relevant legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Respond appropriately when interacting with huntable wild animals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An outline is provided of all the habitats of the huntable wild animals within a conservation area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The behaviours of wild animals and their interactions with other species (as well as with their own) are correctly interpreted, with particular attention to the way the hunter should respond to these behaviours.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Calving, nesting, seasonality, availability of food sources, territory, home range and comfort zones (flight-fight distance), warning signs, calls of birds and animals, herd dynamics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Relevant criteria is applied in the wild animal selection process.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Age criteria, trophy value, sex and sex ratios (appropriate female trophies).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain the ways in which wild animals put indigenous flora to use.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An outline is provided of plants that are eaten by plains game species, along with an explanation of the animal's food preferences.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
An explanation is given of the ways in which specific plant species are utilised by wild animals for the purpose of providing cover.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Clarification is given on the effects of climate and habitat on the behaviour and distribution of wild animals.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Collect and record data on populations and movements of huntable wild animals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Data is collected on the populations and movements of huntable wild animals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Data is recorded in a format appropriate to the context.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The characteristics of wild animal populations are detailed with a view to managing the hunting enterprise.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Mortality, reproduction classes/categories.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
